☀️ 5 Tips for a Safe Beach Day with Baby
A beach day can be fun for the whole family—even with your newest little one! Here are our top five tips to help keep your baby safe at the beach (especially babies under 6 months):
1️⃣ Keep Baby Cool & Hydrated
Dress baby in lightweight, breathable clothing, use a portable fan while relaxing in the shade, and feed often to help maintain hydration, whether breastfed or formula-fed. Watch for signs of overheating, including flushed skin, unusual fussiness, excessive sleepiness, or fewer wet diapers.
2️⃣ Choose Shade First
Use a beach umbrella or sun tent, dress baby in lightweight UPF sun-protective clothing, and add a wide-brimmed hat. Try to avoid direct sun, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. If direct sun exposure can’t be avoided, apply a thin layer of mineral-based sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) to exposed skin.
3️⃣ Baby Wear When You Can
A soft baby carrier keeps your baby close, off the hot sand, and makes it easier to navigate the beach. It also keeps your hands free to carry beach gear or help older children when needed. Keep in mind that babywearing can increase your baby’s body temperature because of close body contact, so dress baby appropriately, take frequent breaks and monitor closely for signs of overheating.
4️⃣ Time Your Beach Trip
Early mornings and late afternoons are typically cooler and have a lower UV index, making them more comfortable for young infants.
5️⃣ Keep It Simple
A shaded blanket, cuddles, and fresh air are often all your little one needs. Don’t feel pressured to spend hours in the sun—short, cool outings are best.
❤️ Wishing your family a safe and memorable beach trip!
