What Causes Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux can be triggered by a variety of foods, habits, and health factors.

Common contributors may include:
โ€ข Large meals
โ€ข Fatty, spicy, or citrus-based foods
โ€ข Coffee, tea, carbonated beverages, or alcohol
โ€ข Lying down soon after eating
โ€ข Smoking or to***co use
โ€ข Stress
โ€ข Increased pressure on the stomach

When the lower esophageal sphincter does not close properly, stomach contents can move back into the esophagus, leading to the burning discomfort associated with reflux.

Because triggers can vary from person to person, ongoing reflux symptoms should be evaluated by a medical provider.

Both are important for digestive health, but they work in different ways.
