Wikivision is pleased to welcome Brooke to the team!

Brooke Yasuda is a second year medical student at the John A Burns. School of Medicine (JABSOM). Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, she earned her undergraduate degree from UCLA. She is interested in pursuing a career in ophthalmology and is currently the Co-Vice President of the Ophthalmology Interest Group at JABSOM and volunteers at the Hawaii Home Project Ophthalmology Clinic. Brooke is passionate about improving access to vision care and is excited to be a part of WikiVision so that she can play a role in expanding access to sight-restoring surgery for those who would otherwise go without care. Outside of medicine, she is an assistant coach for a local high school girls basketball team, where she enjoys mentoring and supporting young student athletes.

Wikivision is honored to have helped yet another patient, Roli. Traveling all the way from Nigeria, Roli suffered from severe cataracts in both eyes, with one eye on the verge of blindness. Although July is not our usual surgery cycle, we made an exception for her due to urgent visa status issues.

Roli shared her deep gratitude with our team for restoring her vision. Now she can care for her daughter more easily, who has battled vitamin D deficiency since birth.

WikiVision is excited to welcome Caitlin Tanji to the team!

Born and raised in Hawaiʻi, Caitlin Tanji is a first-year medical student and Class President for the Class of 2029 at the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine. An alumna of UCLA, where she earned her BS in Human Biology & Society, she is deeply committed to health advocacy and improving access to patient-centered care for underserved local communities. Currently, Caitlin serves as a Manager for the Ophthalmology Hawaiʻi HOME Clinic (Houseless Outreach and Medical Education), helping provide essential vision care and outreach services to people experiencing houselessness on O’ahu. Her dedication to medicine is informed by her experiences as a medical assistant, as well as her work in marketing and project management for a skin microbiome biotech startup. Her interest in ophthalmology is closely tied to serving Hawaiʻi’s kūpuna, with a focus on preserving vision, independence, and quality of life for older adults through equitable, compassionate, and accessible care.

Welcome Dr. Mai Tsukikawa to the WikiVision team!

Dr. Tsukikawa was born in Japan and grew up in Hawaii. She received her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed an internship in Internal Medicine and residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Washington, as well as a Glaucoma fellowship at Duke University.

Dr. Tsukikawa loves volunteering and always looks forward to performing surgeries for underserved patients as a member of WikiVision.

Thank you to our 2025 WikiVision officers for all of their help in organizing the 5th annual free cataract surgery day! Four of the five officers, Flora, Ashlyn, Calder, and Arabella, will be starting college on the mainland and we wish them all the best!

During this year’s 2025 surgery cycle, WikiVision was glad to assist Richard E. A retired engineer, math tutor, and current student enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, Richard noticed that his cataracts had caused a decline in his vision, preventing him from reading and using his computer while studying. Although he felt anxious before the surgery process, he was impressed with the results and, later, expressed his gratitude for our team, noting that the sky “looks blue instead of brown now.” Richard is excited to resume his passion for education and finance now that his eyesight has been restored!

Yesterday, WikiVision held our 5th annual student fundraising concert. With thirteen student performers ranging from kindergarten to twelfth grade, coming from all across the island, it was a great success! We are so grateful to all the performers who came and volunteered their time, sharing talents from jazz improvisation, to hula, to harp. We also heard testimonies from two different patients from this past surgery cycle about what WikiVision and cataract surgery have meant to them. We are so thankful to ‘Iolani School for supporting us and allowing our use of their facilities, to everyone who attended, to all our volunteers, and to the donors who make our mission possible. We wouldn’t have the chance to make change in our community without all of you.

This past weekend, WikiVision also held our annual post-op day! Ophthalmologists checked in with patients to see how they were doing post-surgery, and students conducted interviews to learn about their feelings throughout the process. Next up, our fundraising concert at ‘Iolani School’s Seto Hall, this Saturday at 1pm. We hope to see you there!

WikiVision is thrilled to have hosted our 5th WikiVision Cataract Surgery Day! Helping restore the vision of nearly 60 patients so far this year, we are so grateful to everyone who has contributed to and supported our efforts. Across the ophthalmologists, anesthesiologists, internist, nurses, surgical technicians, the Eye Surgery Center of Hawaii, and Pacific Vision Institute of Hawaii, we are incredibly thankful for each and every person who has made our mission possible both this year and over the past five.
