Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children

Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children Hawaii’s leader in the care of women, infants and children since 1890. Like us for the latest news! A year later, Kauikeolani Children's Hospital opened.
(1583)

This is the story of two hospitals: Kauikeolani Children's Hospital and Kapiolani Maternity Home. Concerned about the welfare of Hawaii's mothers, Queen Kapiolani raised the $8,000 needed to open Kapiolani Maternity Home in 1890. In 1908, Albert and Emma Kauikeolani Wilcox donated $50,000 to start a children's hospital. The community, concerned that two of every seven infants in Hawaii did not liv

e to see their first birthday, rallied to match the Wilcox's gift. The two hospitals joined in 1978 to become Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. Staying true to its mission, the nonprofit hospital has played a vital role in the health of Hawaii's women, children and adolescents. What began a century ago is continuing today. Kapiolani Medical Center is Hawaii’s only women and children's hospital. Each year, we care for thousands of women and children from all over the Pacific – including the very sickest. Philanthropic support is vital. Your gifts make a difference. Just as Hawaii’s families have relied on Kapiolani Medical Center as a community resource, this nonprofit hospital relies on philanthropic support from its ohana of donors. As the physicians, nurses and staff continue to serve the people of Hawaii, and provide exceptional medical care, we thank you for helping to fulfill this important mission.

🌴☀️ Our Kapiʻolani team traded scrubs and office attire for beach vibes during this year's Summer Carnival Beach Bash, a fun-filled celebration of appreciation, connection, and teamwork. The event brought together employees for games, prizes, food, and friendly competition.

Highlights included pie-eating contests, creative castle-building competition, and plenty of opportunities for colleagues to enjoy time together outside of their daily routines. The festivities continued with a special celebration for night shift employees, ensuring team members across all shifts could take part in the summer fun.

At Kapiʻolani, caring for our patients starts with caring for one another. Events like the Summer Carnival are a chance to recognize the incredible dedication of our teams while strengthening the connections that make our workplace so special.

Mahalo to everyone who helped organize this year's Beach Bash and to all who joined the celebration! 💙🏖️🌺

✈️ From Japan to Hawai‘i, a shared commitment to patient care brought healthcare professionals together at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

Earlier this summer, Kapi‘olani welcomed administrators and clinicians from Aiwa Hospital in Japan for a multi-day educational visit and cultural exchange. Throughout their time at Kapi‘olani, the group met with leaders, physicians, frontline staff, and clinical teams to learn more about the care we provide to patients and families across our community.

The visit offered opportunities to share knowledge, exchange perspectives, and explore the many ways healthcare professionals around the world are working to advance patient care. Aiwa Hospital has visited Kapi‘olani for more than two decades, creating a longstanding relationship built on learning, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence.

These meaningful connections remind us that while healthcare systems may be separated by thousands of miles, our dedication to caring for others is universal.

💙 Mahalo to the many team members who helped welcome our guests and showcase the expertise, compassion, and innovation that define Kapi‘olani every day.

🚑 Prepared. Trained. Ready. 💙

Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children recently participated in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026 exercise, joining healthcare, military, and emergency response partners in hands-on training designed to strengthen emergency preparedness and disaster response.

As part of the exercise, team members practiced critical hospital response procedures, including triage, patient transport, bed capacity management, and emergency operations through realistic disaster scenarios. Many of the simulated patients were Hawai‘i Pacific Health summer interns, helping create realistic training opportunities for caregivers and support teams.

Held every other summer in and around the Hawaiian Islands, RIMPAC is the world's largest international maritime exercise, bringing together partners from 31 nations to strengthen coordination and readiness.

👏 Mahalo to our Kapi‘olani team members for their commitment to ensuring we remain ready to care for our community when it matters most.
