Join us on Wednesday, September 16, 5-7 p.m. in the Sullivan Conference Center at the University of Hawai'i Cancer Center, for a free public event focused on the latest breakthroughs in pancreatic cancer research.

This Quest for a Cure presentation will highlight exciting breakthroughs, featuring presentations by UH Cancer Center researchers who have played direct roles in advancing pancreatic cancer research, including Dr. Elizabeth Nakasone and Dr. Jared Acoba.

They will discuss the pivotal clinical trials that helped bring daraxonrasib, a promising new cancer drug, to local patients, and explain what this breakthrough could mean for the future of pancreatic cancer treatment. They will also highlight the first-line pancreatic cancer clinical trial launching at The Queen's Medical Center, and the continued expansion of innovative treatment options in Hawaiʻi.

It will be an inspiring evening of discovery, resilience and hope as we explore the latest innovations in pancreatic cancer research and clinical trials.

If you are curious about how CAR-T therapy for cancer works, and about this therapy's growing availability in Hawai‘i, Dr. Stephanie Si Lim, a researcher at our University of Hawaii Cancer Center, gives a high level explanation in this interview for Hawaii News Now's "Healthier Hawaii" series. Dr. Lim is an oncologist and medical director of the cellular immunotherapy program at Hawai‘i Pacific Health, one of our valued partners in the Hawai‘i Cancer Consortium. She explains how immunotherapy harnesses a patient's own immune system to fight the disease, and says she expects that more types of cancer will be addressed with CAR-T therapy in the next five years.

Sending out the kāhea! "Kāne Talk Story — Prostate Health" on Aug. 18 is a men's kūkākūkā, or discussion, that will cover cancer prevention, and incorporation of traditional cultural practices in a healthy lifestyle.

The event from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kapolei Heritage Center is presented by Kū Ola , a program of our UH Cancer Center.

"When our kāne are strong, physically, mentally, and spiritually, our families and communities thrive. That's why we're gathering together, and we want YOU in the room," the event announcement says. "No matter where you are on your health journey, all are welcome. Come as you are."

Our University of Hawaii Cancer Center center was grateful and proud to welcome nearly 100 guests for "Toast to Hope," an event sponsored on Friday by the nonprofit Friends of the UH Cancer Center.

Attendees toured the center and heard from 11 speakers, including researchers, physicians, cancer survivors, faculty and staff, about the latest scientific advances in cancer, and Hawaii's unique cancer trends. They also learned about the impact of new milestones at the UH Cancer Center — including the recent opening of the new Ho‘ōla Early Phase Clinical Research Center. The Ho‘ōla EPCRC is Hawai‘i's first center dedicated to early-phase clinical trials for cancer. That means more patients will have the opportunity to access innovative treatments without having to fly to the U.S. mainland.

Throughout the evening, attendees also heard stories of hope. Hawaii News Now anchor William Van Osdol (Billy V on Sunrise) was the "surprise celebrity speaker," sharing his personal journey as a cancer survivor, and advocating for our center, Hawaii's only NCI-designated cancer center.

Did you know that our University of Hawaii Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated cancer center led by a two-time cancer survivor? As a survivor of sarcoma and myelodysplastic syndrome, UH Cancer Center Director Dr. Naoto T Ueno's journey means he brings a unique empathy to his work as a cancer researcher, clinical doctor and clinical trialist. He recently posted that it was his 9th "stem cell transplant birthday'!

"Happy Birthday to me!" Dr. Ueno wrote. "My crazy journey has now been 9 years since the transplant. I wish the journey were over, but it is a continuing process of learning and adapting. The journey does not end, and I want to give back to those who have the cancer burden. Mahalo for all the support."

In the Honolulu Star-Advertiser: Dr. Naoto T. Ueno, UH Cancer Center director, called the opening of our center's new Ho‘ōla Early Phase Clinical Research Center a major milestone after years of efforts to provide local patients with more treatment options at home.

“ 'The launch of the UH Cancer Center’s new Ho‘ola Early Phase Clinical Research Center represents a major step toward increasing advanced cancer care in Hawaii,' said Ueno, himself a two-time cancer survivor, in a news release. 'Ho‘ola EPCRC will give qualifying Hawaii patients the opportunity to receive cutting- edge, first-in-Hawaii Phase I clinical trial treatments here at home, without leaving their families and communities to travel to the U.S. mainland.' "
