Just 4 months away from our biggest event of the year. We are so excited to see you all at our Annual Scientific Session in Sunday, November 8, 2026. But until then, continuing our mini series:

✨Meet your HDHA Vice President, Kris Agustin, RDH, BSDH!✨

Howzit! I took a non-traditional path into dental hygiene. I was a teen mom, earned an Associate Degree in Dental Assisting from Heald College, spent nine years as a dental assistant, and later earned my Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

Today, I enjoy serving the profession through volunteer leadership and working alongside colleagues who are committed to supporting dental hygienists throughout Hawaiʻi. Being involved with our association has allowed me to build meaningful professional relationships and contribute to initiatives that benefit our members and our profession.

Outside of dentistry, I enjoy spending time with my two dogs, Bamboo and Hazelnut, gardening, and tackling the occasional DIY project.

Mahalo for the opportunity to serve and be part of such a dedicated professional community.

✨Meet Your HDHA Public Relations Chair and Media Editor: Sara Zeidenberg, RDH, BSDH!✨

As HDHA Media Editor, I help create branded graphics for the HDHA website, email marketing and other design materials. I’m a hygienist on the island of Hawai’i and have lived in Kailua-Kona for 5 years. I love using visuals to show patients that maintaining a healthy mouth positively affects their whole body. When I’m not working, I love to garden and travel with my family as well as design elaborate arts and crafts projects with my 4 year old son.

Happy Monday! Let’s start the week with a spotlight another volunteer leader who has been an incredible asset to our association over the years,

✨Meet Your HDHA Treasurer: Gayle Chang, RDH, BEd✨

Born and raised in Honolulu, HI. Graduated from UH Manoa with Bachelor in Secondary Education and Northwestern University Dental School in Diploma in Dental Hygiene (Chicago, IL). Gayle has served on the Hawaii Board of Dentistry for 2 terms (DH member) and Hawaii Board of Optometry (HBOO) for 2 terms (public member). She has been reappointed to serve a term on the HBOO.

She has been an active member of ADHA and HDHA since graduating in 1975 and served in several leadership roles: HDHA President, Delegate and currently as Treasurer. Gayle also served as ADHA District XII Trustee for two terms. She has done several different jobs: clinician, sales (Sunstar/Butler), Instructor (KCC DA program), and recently retired as office manager, but continues as examiner for Central Regional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS) and teaches OSHA/Infection Prevention, HIPPA and Ethics.

Outside dental: Gayle serves as Treasurer for Troop 1 BSA, active member for Cathedral of St Andrew, and has 2 sons and 5 grandchildren. Favorite thing to do when not volunteering: reading and traveling.

Message from Gayle: “I would to encourage every hygienist to find the passion in you and give back of yourself to the Association. Everyone is a valued part of our profession. Please be part of the solution!!”

On Thursday, May 14, 2026, Your HDHA President Christen, President-Elect Maria, and Vice President Kris had the pleasure of attending the Dental Hygiene Recognition Ceremony for the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) Dental Hygiene Class of 2026. Fun fact: Christen, Maria, and Kris are all proud alumni of the UHM Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program!

“The dental hygiene program at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene is the only baccalaureate level program in the state. It offers the educational preparation required of dental hygienists to deliver oral health care and education to the people of Hawai’i, the continental U.S., and the Pacific-Asia region. The dental hygiene program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, American Dental Association.”

Congratulations to these 15 graduates of the UHM dental hygiene class of 2026 on this incredible accomplishment! All those late nights of studying, early morning lectures, long hours in the clinic, recruiting your own patients, and intense board exams have paid off. The future of dental hygiene is bright. We are confident that you will make significant contributions to the field.

Stay connected with HDHA. We eagerly anticipate your future endeavors and are excited to see what you will achieve. If you are interested in volunteering to serve as a board of trustees member in the near future, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We warmly welcome all HDHA members and encourage recent graduates to join our leadership team. Feel free to contact us if you are interested in getting involved. We look forward to seeing you at future HDHA events!

✨We hope you are subscribed to our email list so you don’t miss out on important information on our next Annual Scientific Session this year, happening on Sunday, November 8, 2026! Stay tuned! Registration open soon! But for now, meet your current HDHA Annual Scientific Session Planning Committee Chairperson, Erin Cortez, MSAH, BSDH, RDH✨

My name is Erin Cortez. I have been a Registered Dental Hygienist since 2013. I worked in private practice for 4.5 years in Oregon, and for about 4 years as a contract dental hygienist at the 21st Dental Company on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Since 2023, I have been working as a dental hygiene instructor at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and also work part-time in private practice.

I served as the HDHA President Elect in 2023, President in 2024, and Immediate Past President in 2025. I currently serve as the Annual Scientific Session Planning Committee Chair.

Outside of work, I have a passion for wellness and teach group fitness classes, specifically Barre. If I’m not at the dental office or in a studio, you can find me on a mountain. I love hiking and just being outside with my husband, daughter, and dog!
