“PRINCESS KAWANANAKOA”

Princess Abigail Wahiʻikaʻahuʻula Campbell Kawānanakoa (1882–1945), loving wife of His Royal Highness Prince David Kawānanakoa (1868-1908).

While she was known to have a cherished Aliʻi lineage, the Constitutional monarchy strictly tracked specific senior hereditary lines for official titles & eligibility to be elected to the throne and other offices.

Princess Abigail Kawānanakoa was not considered to be of rank by the Board of Genealogy of Hawaiian Chiefs (1880-1887) (nor previously) as a “native Aliʻi” or “aliʻi hānau o ka ʻāina”; and thus she was not deemed eligible to be elected to rule the Hawaiian Kingdom under Article 22 of the 1864 Constitution (as her husband H.R.H. Prince David Kawānanakoa was).

Not given a court title during the monarchy by letters patent, nor was “Princess Kawānanakoa” a hereditary title; it was a 1902 courtesy title bestowed by her husband and the Hawaiian people who loved her dearly.

🌺 Merrie Monarch, 1993: "Aia ‘O ‘Āwini Pali Ali’i Hula’ana"

A masterful display of Kohala history brought to life by Hula Hālau Nā Lei o Kaholoku under the direction of nā kumu hula Nani Lim Yap and Leialoha Lim Amina.

Nā Lei O Kaholoku delivered this historic performance of "Aia ‘O ‘Āwini Pali Ali’i Hula’ana" at the 1993 Merrie Monarch Festival.

The story honors the birth of Paiʻea (the future King Kamehameha I) who was taken by Naeʻole to ʻĀwini to protect him; Kahaʻōpūlani being the granddaughter of Aliʻi Umihulumakaokalani who raised the infant there in secret.

The hoʻi (exit chant) used in the performance was composed by Kahaʻōpūlani for Paiʻea, her hānai son.

Mrs. W.H. Hayselden: Ellen Kaipoleimanu (Gibson) Hayselden (1874-1924).

Ellen Kaipoleimanu was the second of seven children born to William Henry Gibson (1840-1893) and Elena Kauihiwahine Kalehuamakanoe (1856-1929).
