So, you’ve booked an appointment with Patrick Norton! 👋

Here’s a little introduction to what you can expect and the space where you’ll be joining Patrick for your session.

We know walking into a new counseling space for the first time can feel a little unfamiliar, so we hope this helps you feel a little more comfortable before you arrive.

Be on the lookout for our other counselors and their spaces.

Want to hear more than “good” or “fine” about their school day? Focus less on getting answers and more on creating connection.

Before the questions, try connection:

• Give them a hug and tell them, “I missed you today.”
• Let them have a snack and decompress before asking about school.
• Tell them something about your day first.
• Sit beside them or do something together without expecting conversation.
• Notice their mood before jumping into questions.
• Let the car ride be quiet if that’s what they need.
• When they do start talking, listen before fixing or teaching.

Kids often open up when they feel connected, not questioned.

Sometimes the best way to hear about their world is simply reminding them that you’re happy to be back in it.

Back to school season is a transition, and transitions can be hard on everyone, kids included.

Changes in routine, sleep, expectations, and environment require our brains and bodies to adjust. During that adjustment, you might notice more irritability, anxiety, fatigue, clinginess, or bigger emotions in your child, and maybe in yourself too.

These reactions don’t always mean something is wrong. Sometimes the nervous system simply needs time to adapt to what’s new.

Keep routines predictable where you can, lower expectations during the first few weeks, and prioritize rest and connection.

Adjustment takes time. Give your kids and yourself room to settle into the new rhythm.

You can love your baby deeply and still struggle with postpartum depression.

Sometimes postpartum depression doesn’t look like wanting to escape motherhood.

Sometimes it looks like:

Loving your baby more than you knew possible but wondering why you don’t feel like yourself.

Feeling a sense of dread as the evening comes.

Having to convince yourself to get up, eat, shower, leave the house, or do the things that normally come naturally.

Feeling heavy when everyone around you assumes this should be one of the happiest seasons of your life.

And quietly wondering…

“Am I ever going to feel like me again?”

Postpartum depression doesn’t always look the way we expect it to.

You can be grateful.
You can be bonded.
You can be a wonderful mother.

And you can still need support.

You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable to reach out.

How Do You Know It’s More Than the Baby Blues?

The “baby blues” are incredibly common. During the first two weeks after delivery, many parents experience mood swings, tearfulness, irritability, or heightened emotions as hormones rapidly shift and life adjusts to caring for a newborn. These symptoms are temporary and typically improve on their own. When symptoms last longer than two weeks, become more intense, or begin interfering with daily life, they may be signs of a Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder.

You don’t have to have it all together before you walk through the door.

At Apollo Counseling, we believe healing starts with feeling safe. Safe to be honest. Safe to ask hard questions. Safe to laugh, cry, sit in silence, or simply take things one step at a time.

Patrick’s office was designed to be more than just a room. It’s a place where you can exhale, be yourself, and know you’re not walking through life alone.

Sometimes the first step toward healing is simply finding a place where you feel safe enough to begin
