As a Social Entrepreneur, I couldn’t agree more with this article by Carmen. I’ve read just about everything there is to read about Social Entrepreneurship since July 13, 2007, when I discovered that it was a thing. I’ll never forget Googling “how to change the world” and seeing the first thing that popped up, a book by David Bornstein titled HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD: Social Entrepreneurs and The Power of New Ideas. I knew instantly THAT is who I was! I was a Social Entrepreneur. It was one of the most amazing seasons of my life.
At that point, I’d been carrying a vision to “change the world” with my massage and wellness business for at least 12 years. (Now, add 13 more years—-almost 25!) I had all the ideas, the heart and mind and passion—-I just didn’t have the language for what I envisioned, until that night. I didn’t sleep a wink on July 13, 2007. I stayed up all night and I ordered 19 books on Amazon. I read them all. After that infusion of knowledge and understanding and affirmation, I knew I would be unstoppable. But only with capitalism.
Without capitalism and a free-ish market, all the innovative ideas that compel me each and every day to work, study, dream, plan, work toward making a difference for others wouldn’t happen. CCCompassionary exists because of capitalism.
I read every word of Carmen’s article. (Interesting timing, too—I have a friend named Carmen that lives in Bolivia and is part of Compassion. Today is her 5th birthday!) Here’s just a bit of what she said, in conclusion:
“Aside from better economic and legislative policies, what America needs is a more intense appreciation of individual freedom and capitalism. Such a crazy idea is not acquired through public schools or becoming a public servant. Young people don't need more years of schooling with more worthless college degrees and student loans in default. America needs more entrepreneurs and businessmen. It needs more people with drive and ambition, more self-starters, more innovators, more people who are willing to take chances.”
Only in a freemarket system can we truly achieve individual liberty and human flourishing
