Before You Choose Compounded Hormones, Read This:

Let’s clear up something that gets really confusing in the hormone world.

Bioidentical does NOT mean compounded.

I prescribe bioidentical hormones every day. Estradiol patches, gels and sprays are bioidentical. Micronized progesterone is bioidentical. And they’re FDA-approved, insurance covered.

Why does that matter?

Because if I prescribe you a 0.05 mg estradiol patch, I want to know there’s actually 0.05 mg in that patch and that it’s going to deliver the medication the way it’s supposed to.

With compounded hormones, the pharmacy is making the formulation. That can be incredibly helpful when we need something that isn’t commercially available—but the finished product has not gone through the same FDA testing for dose consistency, absorption, safety and effectiveness.

And then there’s saliva testing.

You may have seen programs that collect your saliva, measure your hormones and then make a “custom” hormone prescription based on those results. It sounds very scientific and “individualized.”

The problem is, we don’t have validated saliva levels that tell us how much estrogen, progesterone or testosterone a woman should be prescribed.

Saliva hormone levels can change throughout the day and can be affected by how and when the sample is collected. And if you’re already using hormones—especially something applied to your skin—saliva results can be even more difficult to interpret.

So a saliva test cannot reliably say:
“Your estrogen is this number, so you need exactly this much estrogen.”

That’s not how we dose menopause hormone therapy.

My rule is pretty simple: if there is an FDA-approved bioidentical option that meets your needs, that’s where I start at Eden.

If we have a legitimate reason to compound something, we compound it.

Compounding is a tool—not an upgrade.

If I told you that 70 miles into a long road trip, you were going to drive over a nail, get a flat tire, and have to walk all the way back home… would you take a different route?

Now replace the car with your body.
Replace 70 miles with age 70.
Replace the nail and flat tire with a fall and a broken hip.
And replace that long walk home with the long road back to your health and independence.

That’s how I want women to think about hormone therapy.

It’s not just about treating hot flashes today.

For the right woman, estrogen can help protect bone and reduce fracture risk while you’re taking it.

The goal isn’t just to feel better now.

It’s to change the road ahead.

Having trouble finding your estrogen patch? You’re not alone.

Estradiol patch prescriptions have increased 162% in just two years, and manufacturers are struggling to keep up with demand.

Here’s the tip: Don’t panic if your pharmacy can’t get your usual patch.

There are other options. Another patch brand or strength may be available, and estrogen also comes in gels, sprays, and pills.

And yes—all of the estrogen options prescribed at Eden Health Rx are bioidentical, meaning the estradiol is chemically identical to the estrogen your body naturally makes.

Call your provider before you run out so you can make a plan instead of going without your estrogen.

And maybe the best part of this shortage?

Women are finally asking for menopause care. ❤️

Following a massive 162 percent surge in prescriptions and a major FDA label reversal, a critical shortage of estradiol patches is leaving patients and doctors scrambling for alternatives.

đź’ˇTips on Tuesday:

Hot flashes are more than just feeling hot.

They’re a sign that your brain’s temperature-control system is being affected by changing estrogen levels. And research has found that frequent or persistent hot flashes may be associated with increased cardiovascular risk.

Today’s tip: Don’t just dismiss your hot flashes as something you have to put up with.

They’re symptoms. They’re information. And they’re treatable.

Hormone therapy is the most effective treatment for hot flashes for women who are appropriate candidates. There are also effective nonhormonal options.

You don’t get extra points for suffering through menopause. ❤️

Since opening Eden and having the time to practice the way I believe women deserve, I’ve helped uncover diagnoses that had nothing to do with menopause:

1. Hemochromatosis
2. Polycythemia vera
3. Sleep apnea
4. A significant heart blockage requiring a stent
5. Severe vitamin deficiencies

I listened to her symptoms, looked closely at her labs, and made the appropriate referrals.

Not everything is a hormone issue. If your hormones are adequately treated and you still don’t feel well, we keep looking.

At Eden, you are never a number. Your health becomes my priority, and I become one of your biggest cheerleaders as we work together to help you feel well again.
