Ms. Una fell while struggling with significant back pain. She had lost feeling in her leg. In the ER she learned her back problem was serious enough to require surgical intervention.

Dr. Pourtaheri had recently performed a successful surgery on Una's 90 year old brother, so she knew she was in good hands.

"After the surgery was done, I felt awesome relief. It was done! I was made new. Still an old 87 year old woman, but now with such wonderful freedom from awful pain. There was no pain. Never had any pain. My leg is back. Alive and well. I will walk again! I can sleep without pain keeping me up. It is such a pleasure just to be able to sleep.

Given to me by Dr Pourtaheri and his team and procedure. I highly recommend."

Thank you for trusting Dr. Pourtaheri and Gulf Coast Orthopedics to get you back to living pain free!

School - and school sports - is back! Sports can be hard on the body, so make sure you are doing everything you can to keep your athlete injury-free and playing the sports they love.

Here are a few simple ways to protect their bones, muscles, and joints:

- Warm up before activity to prepare your muscles and joints
- Use proper technique and equipment (including supportive, footwear)
- Build strength and flexibility to improve stability and mobility
- Increase activity gradually rather than doing too much, too soon
- Stay hydrated
- Listen to your body. Pain, swelling, or persistent soreness may be a sign that it’s time to rest and get evaluated
- Make recovery a priority by allowing adequate rest between workouts and practices

Sports injuries aren’t always preventable, but smart preparation can help reduce your risk.

Not Every Fall Is "Just a Fall."

After a fall, some aches and bruises are expected, but certain symptoms shouldn't be ignored.

⚠️ Watch for:
• Severe or worsening pain
• Swelling that doesn't improve
• Inability to bear weight or walk normally
• A joint that looks deformed or out of place
• Numbness, tingling, or weakness
• Pain that doesn't improve after a few days

These could be signs of a fracture, ligament injury, tendon tear, or other orthopedic condition that needs prompt evaluation.

If you've had a fall and something doesn't feel right, don't wait. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent further injury and get you back to doing what you love.

Hip pain that won't go away could be more than arthritis. Avascular necrosis (AVN) occurs when blood flow to the hip is reduced, causing bone tissue to weaken and collapse over time. Early diagnosis and treatment can help preserve the joint and relieve pain. If you're experiencing persistent hip pain, stiffness, or difficulty walking, don't wait. Schedule an evaluation with one of our providers, and get back to the activities you love.

Keep Those Bones Strong!

Osteoporosis is a common condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle, which increases the risk of fractures. We see a lot of osteoporosis-related fractures, especially in the hips, spine, and wrists. It often develops silently, so prevention is key!

Here are a few ways to help keep your bones healthy:
- Get enough calcium and vitamin D.
- Stay active with weight-bearing and strength-training exercises.
- Avoid smoking and limit alcohol.
- Schedule an appointment with our Bone Health Clinic and get bone density scans and treatment options.

Healthy habits today can help protect your bones for years to come!

Last Thursday Dr. Wax had the pleasure of speaking with the hospital staff at Terrebonne General Health System about caring for patients with common hand and wrist injuries.

He discussed common orthopedic conditions, assessment and treatment considerations, and ways the healthcare team can work together to provide the best possible care for patients. He also touched on workplace ergonomics and practical strategies that can help reduce the risk of hand and wrist injuries among the healthcare professionals.

Thank you for the opportunity to share knowledge with such a dedicated group. Collaborations like these help strengthen patient care and support the healthcare professionals who serve our community every day.
