Dear Pet Parents,

Spring and summer mean more time outdoors, but they also bring a hidden danger: intestinal parasites. Today, we are focusing on one of the most common and stubborn culprits—Giardia—along with other frequent microscopic invaders.

Here is what you need to know to keep your furry family members safe, healthy, and itch-free from the inside out.

What is Giardia?

Giardia is not a worm. It is a microscopic, single-celled parasite that lives in the intestines of dogs and cats. Animals become infected by swallowing the parasite's cyst stage, usually found in contaminated water, soil, or f***s.

Key Symptoms to Watch For

Parasites can hide well, but they often leave clues. Contact us if you notice:

Watery or soft stool (often with a strong, foul odor)

Mucus in the f***s

Weight loss despite a normal appetite

Vomiting or lethargy

Scooting or licking the rear end

Other Common Intestinal Invaders

Beyond Giardia, pets frequently encounter these common worms:

Hookworms: Small blood-suckers that cause anemia.

Roundworms: Long, spaghetti-like worms common in puppies and kittens.

Whipworms: Stubborn parasites that live in the large intestine.

Tapeworms: Transmitted by fleas; they look like small grains of rice near your pet's tail.

4 Simple Prevention Steps

Ditch the Puddles: Never let your pet drink from standing water, ponds, or public bowls.

Scoop the P**p: Clean up waste immediately to prevent parasites from contaminating your yard.

Wash Your Hands: Some parasites, including Giardia, can occasionally pass to humans. Always wash up after cleaning pet waste.

Keep Up with Preventatives: Standard monthly heartworm medications often protect against common worms, but Giardia requires specific environmental management and targeted treatment if diagnosed.

Schedule a Screening

The best way to catch these hidden bugs is a routine f***l test. We recommend screening your pet at least once a year, or immediately if they develop diarrhea.

Abby has been back to see us a few times since her amputation! She’s enjoying her life with her forever family! Since her amputation, she has gotten her staples out (unfortunately by her on doing) and caused it to open. She’s had to do quite a few bandage changes and antibiotics but she’s healing well now! We have also determined she has a torn tendon on her back leg. she’s walking flat footed due to this and she will have life long issues with it. Unfortunately the surgery is very expensive but her parents are determined. We would not being doing the surgery but can accept donations for them if anyone is wanting to help!
