"Just stick to one language." It's one of the most common pieces of advice bilingual parents get and one of the most harmful. Here's what the research actually says: bilingual children may say fewer words in each language separately, but their total vocabulary across both languages is on par with monolingual peers. That's a really important distinction. When we evaluate a bilingual child, we look at both languages together, not just one in isolation. A true speech or language delay shows up across both languages. It is not caused by learning two at once.
In fact, growing up bilingual comes with real cognitive benefits: stronger working memory, better attention, and greater mental flexibility. Two languages aren't a burden on a developing brain. They're a gift. If you have concerns about your bilingual child's speech or language development, the answer isn't to strip away half of their world. The answer is to get a proper evaluation from a speech-language pathologist who understands bilingual development.
Your child deserves to grow up speaking the language of their grandparents, their culture, their roots. Questions about your bilingual child's development? Contact Advent Therapy Solutions today!
