“Outside of God, my grandbabies and my children, Harris Health really got me through this.”

Juana Alvarez Arzate was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 when she lived in California. After a mastectomy and treatment, she was cancer free and moved to Houston in 2012 where she received her follow up care at Harris Health’s Survivorship Clinic.

In 2018 a biopsy showed her cancer had returned.

“I thank God because I’ve beaten cancer twice,” she says. “And I’m thankful for my family support and especially to Harris Health for all of the care they have given me. To others who are going through this—don’t give up.”

Maribel Acosta Alviso’s world changed in 2023. After her annual mammogram, they immediately did an ultrasound and scheduled her for a biopsy.

“When they told me I had breast cancer, I wanted to get
up and leave,” she says. “It was a shocking experience. I couldn’t even hear what the doctor was saying
because I was crying so much.”

Today, she’s in Survivorship Clinic and is grateful for the care she received at Harris Health Smith Clinic and Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital.

“I’m so thankful for the support I had from my family, from the medical team and Lorena Ortiz [community health worker],” she says. “The Lord has me here for a reason and now I make sure to encourage others that are going through something similar.”
