MENTAL HEALTH FACT FRIDAY: Reassurance Feeds OCD

One of the sneakiest compulsions in OCD and anxiety is reassurance seeking.

It often looks harmless because it temporarily reduces anxiety. But every time we seek certainty, OCD learns that uncertainty must be dangerous.

The problem? The relief never lasts.

Instead of teaching your brain, “I can handle not knowing,” reassurance teaches, “I need an answer before I can move on.”

ERP helps people practice a different skill: making room for uncertainty while continuing to engage in what matters most.

💭 What reassurance question does your OCD or anxiety ask over and over again?

Feeling overwhelmed by anxiety? Try the STOP technique. 🛑

The goal isn’t to get rid of anxiety. It’s to create enough space to respond thoughtfully instead of letting anxiety take the wheel.

Anxiety often tells us we need to act immediately. In reality, a brief pause can help us reconnect with what matters most.

ERP is considered one of the gold standard treatments for OCD and anxiety disorders.

ERP helps people gradually face feared situations while resisting compulsions, avoidance, or reassurance seeking.

Over time, this helps retrain the brain’s fear response and reduce OCD’s grip.

Therapy is not just for crisis situations.

You do not have to wait until things feel unbearable to ask for support. Many people start therapy because they want help managing their stress, coping with anxiety or simply understanding themselves better.

Seeking support early can help prevent things from becoming more overwhelming later. Mental health care is not just about surviving, it is also about growing, healing, and learning how to thrive. 💚

Mental health conversations don’t have to be perfect to make a difference. Sometimes, a simple “How are you, really?” can help someone feel seen, supported, and less alone.

Creating a healthier workplace starts with normalizing honest conversations, checking in with each other, and making space for support without judgment.

Small conversations can have a big impact. 💚

Anxiety doesn’t always “look anxious.”

Many people silently struggle while appearing high-functioning on the outside.

Mental Health Awareness Month reminder:
Rest is productive. Reflection is powerful. Recharging is necessary.

You do not have to earn your rest by burning yourself out first. Take a moment this month to slow down, check in with yourself, and care for your mental health the same way you care for everyone else. 🌿

Mental Health Awareness Month Bingo 😅💚

Be honest… how many squares can you check off? 👀

✔ Overthought a text
✔ Avoided a phone call
✔ Googled symptoms at 2am
✔ Bought a planner to “get life together”

You’re definitely not the only one.

Sometimes levity helps normalize the very real ways stress, anxiety, and overwhelm can show up in everyday life. Mental health conversations don’t always have to be heavy to matter.

In this month’s newsletter, Megan Pike, MEd, LPC- Associate, shared practical insight on the power of mindfulness and how small moments of present-moment awareness can help reduce stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm.

One of our favorite reminders from her spotlight:

Mindfulness is not about “emptying your mind” or forcing yourself to relax. It’s about gently noticing the present moment without judgment and returning your attention when your mind wanders.

Sometimes support starts with something as simple as:

• Taking three slow breaths
• Grounding into your surroundings
• Pausing before reacting
• Noticing thoughts without getting pulled into them

These small practices can create space to respond with more calm, clarity, and intention.
