A quick re-introduction 👋

There are quite a few new faces here, so I thought it was time to introduce myself again.

I’m Dr. Sean Delaney, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon in Houston. My practice is focused exclusively on the face, with a particular emphasis on deep plane facelift and neck lift surgery, rhinoplasty, and facial rejuvenation.

What I care about most is pretty simple: natural results.

I don’t want my patients to look “done,” pulled, or like a different person. My goal is for you to still look like yourself—just refreshed, balanced, and confident.

Outside the operating room, I’m a husband, a very new dad, a dog person, and probably more detail-oriented than is healthy. Life looks a little different these days—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I genuinely love what I do, and I still spend a lot of my free time studying techniques, reviewing outcomes, and figuring out how to make what I do better.

For those of you who are new here, welcome. I use this page to share real patient results, explain how facial plastic surgery actually works, talk honestly about recovery, and hopefully make the process a little less intimidating.

What is the best age for a facelift?

There isn’t one magic number. Facelift timing depends much more on your anatomy—skin laxity, jowling, and changes in the face and neck—than on your chronological age.

It’s also a very personal decision. The right time is when the changes you’re seeing bother you enough that you’re ready to consider surgery.

The goal isn’t to have a facelift as early as possible or to wait as long as possible. It’s to choose the right procedure at the right time for you.

Hair preservation during facelift surgery starts with the details.

When an incision is placed near the hairline, I’m thinking not only about where the scar will ultimately sit, but also about protecting the surrounding hair follicles.

Four surgical principles I pay particular attention to:
• Beveling the incision to follow the angle of the follicles rather than cutting across them
• Respecting follicle direction, which changes throughout the temporal and hairline regions
• Minimizing tension on the skin closure by allowing the deeper layers to carry the load
• Using cautery judiciously near the incision to limit unnecessary thermal injury to surrounding follicles and tissue

Hair loss can still occur after surgery for several reasons, but careful surgical technique can help minimize avoidable injury to the follicles.

Small details matter—especially around the hairline.

Do you have to shave your hair for a facelift? ✂️

Yes—but probably much less than you think.

For my facelift patients, I trim only a narrow strip of hair around the portions of the incision that extend into the hairline. This gives me the visibility and access I need during surgery while preserving as much of the surrounding hair as possible.

Because only a small amount is trimmed, the longer surrounding hair can usually be styled to conceal the shaved areas during recovery.

It’s a small detail, but thoughtful incision placement and hair preservation are both important parts of facelift planning.

Your surgical incision is supposed to change.

One of the most common questions I hear after surgery is:
“Is this normal?”

The truth is that every surgical incision follows a predictable healing process. It may become redder before it fades, firmer before it softens, and continue changing long after the skin has closed.

Most surgeons tell patients when they’ll be presentable. I think it’s just as important to explain why their incision changes over the months that follow.

In this series, I walk through the three phases of incision healing, what you should expect during each stage, and when it’s time to contact your surgeon.

Understanding the healing process can replace unnecessary anxiety with confidence—and help you recognize when something truly deserves attention.

One of the most common misconceptions after surgery is that recovery means staying in bed.

While rest is an important part of healing, gentle movement is too.

After an isolated facelift, the risk of developing a blood clot is fortunately very low—much lower than after many body contouring procedures. But “low risk” doesn’t mean “no risk,” which is why we encourage our patients to begin taking short walks the day of surgery.

Walking isn’t about burning calories or getting exercise. It’s about keeping your blood circulating, helping your lungs recover after anesthesia, reducing stiffness, and supporting your body’s natural healing process.

Our recommendation is simple:
🚶 Walk for 5–10 minutes every 1–2 hours while you’re awake.
🦶 Perform ankle pumps while you’re resting.
💧 Stay hydrated.
😴 Then get back to resting.

Recovery isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing the right things consistently.

As always, follow your surgeon’s specific postoperative instructions, since every patient and every procedure is different.
