💙 MYTH VS. FACT: Are severe period cramps just a normal part of growing up?

Many teenage girls are told that painful periods are simply something they have to get used to. But here's something every parent should know: Period pain that regularly interferes with your teen's daily life should never be dismissed.

While mild menstrual cramps are common, severe pain that causes your teen to miss school, lose sleep, skip activities, or struggle with everyday tasks deserves attention.

🌸 What parents should watch for:

Cramps that regularly interfere with school or daily activities

Pain that becomes more severe over time

Nausea, vomiting, or significant discomfort during periods

Menstrual pain that doesn't improve with appropriate home care or over-the-counter medication

Sometimes, severe menstrual pain may be associated with an underlying condition, such as endometriosis. However, not every teen with painful periods has an underlying condition, and a pediatric evaluation can help determine the next steps.

💕 Parents, your teen shouldn't have to suffer in silence.

Encourage open conversations about menstrual health. Listen when your teen says they're in pain, and remind them that asking for help is always okay.

💙 Did you know that spending too much time in one position can affect the shape of your baby’s head?

During the first few months of life, a baby’s skull is still soft and developing. Because of this, repeated pressure on the same area can sometimes cause a flat spot to form, a condition known as positional plagiocephaly.

The good news? There are simple things parents can do to help support healthy head development! 👶

✨ Make tummy time part of your daily routine. Start with short, supervised sessions while your baby is awake, gradually increasing the time as they grow stronger.

✨ Encourage your baby to look in different directions. Alternate the side you hold or feed your baby from, and place toys where they encourage gentle head turning.

✨ Limit unnecessary time in baby seats. When your baby is awake, give them opportunities for supervised floor play instead of spending extended periods in swings, bouncers, or car seats outside of travel.

✨ Always prioritize safe sleep. Babies should still be placed on their backs for every sleep, even if you're concerned about a flat spot. Never use pillows or head-positioning devices to reshape their head.

A gentle reminder for parents: Noticing a flat spot doesn't necessarily mean something is seriously wrong. It's fairly common in infancy, but persistent flattening, a strong preference for turning the head to one side, or difficulty moving the neck deserves a pediatric evaluation.

Could your child’s tiredness, irritability, or trouble focusing be more than just a busy day? 💙�

Iron plays an important role in your child’s growth and development. It helps the body make hemoglobin, which carries oxygen throughout the body, and supports healthy brain development, energy, and learning.�

When children don’t get enough iron, the signs aren’t always obvious. Some may experience:
💤 Unusual tiredness or low energy
💙 Pale skin
🍎 Poor appetite
🧠 Difficulty concentrating or increased irritability
🩺 Headaches, dizziness, or weakness�

Certain children may be more at risk, including picky eaters, toddlers who drink too much cow’s milk, and children who eat very few iron-rich foods.�

But here’s what parents should remember: These symptoms don’t automatically mean your child has low iron. Many other conditions can cause similar changes, which is why a proper pediatric evaluation matters.

If you’ve noticed ongoing fatigue, unusual paleness, changes in appetite, or concerns about your child’s diet, talk with your pediatrician. A simple blood test may help determine whether iron deficiency is contributing to their symptoms.�

And remember, iron supplements should only be given when recommended by your child’s healthcare provider. Too much iron can be harmful.�

Nosebleeds can look scary, especially when they keep happening. 💙

An occasional nosebleed is common in children and is often related to dry air, allergies, colds, nose picking, or irritation inside the nose. But when nosebleeds become frequent or difficult to stop, it’s worth discussing with your pediatrician.

Pay closer attention if the bleeding lasts more than 10–15 minutes despite firm pressure, happens without an obvious trigger, or your child also has easy bruising, bleeding gums, unusual bleeding, paleness, weakness, or significant tiredness.

If a nosebleed happens, have your child sit upright and lean slightly forward, then pinch the soft part of the nose continuously for about 10 minutes. Avoid tilting the head backward, which can cause blood to run down the throat.

Most childhood nosebleeds are minor, but repeated episodes deserve a closer look to make sure there isn’t another cause that needs attention. 🩺💙��

A sore throat can be a minor part of a cold, but sometimes, it deserves a closer look. 💙

Fever, painful swallowing, swollen glands, white patches in the throat, or a rash can be clues that something more than a simple viral illness may be going on. And if your child’s symptoms are getting worse instead of better, it’s a good idea to check in with their pediatrician.

Seek prompt medical care if your child has trouble breathing, is drooling or unable to swallow, is unusually sleepy or difficult to wake, or isn’t drinking enough to stay hydrated.

You don’t have to figure out the cause of a sore throat on your own. A pediatric evaluation can help determine whether your child needs testing, treatment, or simply supportive care and time to recover. 🩺

Why do cough, congestion, and discomfort sometimes seem worse at night? 🌙💙

For many children, bedtime can make symptoms feel more noticeable. Lying down can worsen post-nasal drip and congestion, dry air may irritate the throat and airways, and a cough can seem louder when everything around them is quiet.

A few simple things may help make the night more comfortable: encourage fluids, use saline for congestion, run a cool-mist humidifier, and allow plenty of rest.

It can be reassuring to know that a rough night does not always mean your child is getting worse. Still, if your child is having trouble breathing, seems unusually sleepy, is not drinking well, or symptoms are clearly worsening, it’s important to check in with your pediatrician.

Sometimes nighttime symptoms just need a little extra comfort, and sometimes they need a closer look. 🤍�

ADHD medication isn’t meant to make a child “quiet. 💙

When treatment is working well, the goal isn’t to change your child’s personality or take away their energy. It’s to help reduce ADHD symptoms that may be making everyday life harder, like difficulty focusing, impulsivity, or trouble completing tasks.

Your child should still laugh, play, talk, explore, and feel like themselves. ✨

That’s also why finding the right medication and dose can take careful monitoring. If your child seems unusually withdrawn, overly tired, “not themselves,” or you notice concerning changes in appetite, sleep, mood, or behavior, talk with their pediatrician. Medication adjustments may sometimes be needed.

ADHD care isn’t about creating a quieter child, it’s about helping your child function at their best while still being themselves. 💙

Breathing changes are one of those symptoms parents should never feel they have to “wait and see” about. 💙�

When your child is sick, pay attention to how they’re breathing, not just whether they have a cough or fever.

Signs that may mean your child is working too hard to breathe include:

🫁 Breathing much faster than usual
🫁 Skin pulling in between or underneath the ribs with each breath
🫁 Nostrils flaring or obvious effort with breathing
🫁 Difficulty speaking, crying, eating, or drinking because they’re short of breath
🫁 Lips or face appearing blue, gray, or unusually pale�

If your child is struggling to breathe, turning blue or gray, is difficult to wake, or cannot speak or drink because of their breathing, seek emergency medical care right away.�

You know your child’s normal breathing best. If something looks different or worries you, it’s always appropriate to have them checked. 💙�

Beginning October 1, 2026, we’re updating a few of our office policies to help our team stay on schedule and continue providing timely, organized care for every child and family we serve.

⏰ Late Arrivals: We understand that unexpected delays happen. Arrivals 15 minutes or more after the scheduled appointment time may be subject to a $35 late arrival fee.

🚶 Walk-In Appointments: Walk-ins are welcome when our schedule allows and will be subject to a $35 fee.

📄 Printed Medical Records: Printed copies of medical records are available upon request for a $75 fee.

We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation. These updates help us respect each family’s appointment time and keep your child’s care running as smoothly as possible. 💙
