The five-year survival rate for breast cancer is now above 90%, thanks in large part to screening and early detection. The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends all women aged 40–74 get screening mammograms every two years. For Medicare patients, the CMS Part C measure for breast cancer screening states every-two-year screenings for women ages 52-74.
Breast cancer awareness month presents a good opportunity for you to connect with your patients on the importance of screening:
• Educate at every touchpoint.
• Make scheduling easy by providing handouts with phone numbers and websites of nearby screening centers.
• Use your EHR to send out text messages, emails, and patient portal reminders.
• Identify and address barriers by asking about your patients’ potential concerns and debunking any myths that may be preventing them from getting their mammogram.
By raising awareness for prevention and screenings, you can make a significant positive impact on not only your patients but on closing this gap.
