Our intern spotlight series continues! 🦴
Meet Michael Alfred, M.D., one of our PGY-1 orthopedic surgery residents. Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dr. Alfred completed his undergraduate studies at the University of St. Thomas and earned his medical degree at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans.
When asked why he chose orthopedics, he shared:
“I’ve always loved the combination of surgery, problem-solving and creativity that comes with orthopedics. There’s something rewarding about meeting patients on their hardest days, helping them regain function and provide a better quality of life. I love seeing the impact of a successful outcome firsthand.”
His previous experience at Baylor also played an important role in his decision to return for residency.
“My time at Baylor as a student had a huge impact on me. I loved the learning environment and the opportunities I was given to grow. I was fortunate to learn from people who were supportive, approachable and genuinely invested in teaching me. I learn best when I’m surrounded by people I trust, and Baylor provided that kind of environment.”
He was also drawn to the diverse patient populations and clinical experiences available through Baylor.
“From the VA and Ben Taub (a Level I trauma center) to Baylor Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital, we see everything. I’m excited to continue learning, growing and serving these communities.”
Outside of work, you can usually find him listening to music, playing golf or basketball, walking in the park or trying out a new food spot.
