The IFFS promotes research, education, and superior clinical care in global reproductive health. Twe

International co-operation and dialogue in the field of fertility and sterility can be said to have truly commenced in 1951 in Rio de Janeiro with the formation of the International Fertility Association (IFA). Eminent scientists from various parts of the world became members and triennial World Conferences in Fertility and Sterility were organized. in 1968, the IFA underwent restructuring and the

IFFS was born. Membership has grown and at present, over sixty National Fertility Societies are affiliated. It is estimated over 50,000 specialists worldwide concerned in the areas of fertility and sterility are brought together under one umbrella organization. As part of its educational outreach, each year IFFS conducts workshops in selected cities in underdeveloped countries, sponsors a Symposium in its International Series on topics of regional concern, and every three years holds a World Congress hosted by a national fertility society from within the federation.

Why is 25th July observed as World IVF Day and World Embryologist Day?

• on 25th July 1978,the world's first baby conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF)
• Her name: Louise Joy Brown her birth in the UK, which proved that conception outside the human body was possible.
• The little girl represented a major breakthrough in the field of in vitro fertilisation (IVF), the process of using the eggs and s***m of donors and artificially kicking off pregnancy outside the human body.
• The world’s first “test tube baby”, but people still like to point out “there were no test tubes actually involved in the process.” She was conceived in a petri dish, but “petri dish baby” didn’t quite have the same ring.
• WORLD IVF DAY: Commemorates Louise Brown's birth in the UK and Helps break the social stigma around infertility and educates people on reproductive health options.
• WORLD Embryologist DAY: honors the hard work of lab scientists, doctors, and nurses who handle assisted reproductive technology (ART). Today, embryologists continue to push the boundaries of reproductive medicine.

The theme of the IFFS 26th World Congress 2027, Global Access & Advances in Fertility Care, recognises that advancing reproductive medicine means not only driving scientific innovation but also improving equitable access to high-quality fertility care.

Despite significant progress, disparities in access, affordability, education, and healthcare systems continue to affect patients worldwide. Addressing these challenges requires collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and borders.

Psychological and mental health aspects of fertility care are addressed in this new special issue paper by Laurel Anderson, Alison J. Meyers and Alice D. Domar.

Patients undergoing treatment for infertility experience higher levels of psychological distress than the general population. Current research suggests that the increased stress, anxiety and depression levels in these individuals may be affecting their emotional well-being, treatment drop-out rates and clinical outcomes.

This paper emphasizes the need for mental health treatment as an integral part of patient care, including psychological interventions to provide greater support to patients and mitigate the effects of mental health symptoms.
