As part of our commitment to restoring independence and quality of life for our patients and thanks to a gift from the Falling Forward Foundation, we are offering scholarships for patients who have exhausted insurance benefits so they can continue their recovery journey.

School teacher Evelyn has been coming to TIRR Memorial Hermann for several years to help with treatment for Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS). During her hospital stays, she participates in therapy sessions with our facility dogs Annie and Pilot.

The therapy helps Evelyn improve muscle weakness and numbness caused by GBS while the facility dogs assist her by reducing stress, lowering her heart rate and blood pressure and distracting her from pain so she can focus on functional goals during her sessions.

During her journey with us and through her work with the facility dogs, Evelyn has gone from barely throwing a ball while sitting to walking and holding a leash for Annie and Pilot. Annie’s bond with Evelyn was so strong that Evelyn named her own German Shepherd after her when she returned home.

Take a peek at the sweet moments they’ve shared together!

After experiencing a cardiac arrest and being brought back to life, Margaret was in coma for 10 days with no signs of recovery. But when her family discovered she was able to speak a few words, her journey changed.

After waking up, she began her long road to recovery at TIRR Memorial Hermann. With help from The Challenge Program, an outpatient treatment program designed to help brain injury and stroke survivors maximize their potential and transition to independent living, she regained her mobility and eventually her independence.

'Margaret just spoke!' The moment that changed everything for one Houston family.

What began as subtle behavioral changes and a headache for Steve turned out to be a complex stroke diagnosis. After undergoing lifesaving care and spending time in the ICU, he transitioned to Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Hospital-Katy for rehabilitation, where he needed help with most daily tasks. Through intensive, structured therapy and clinical guidance, he made steady progress.

Within six months, he was walking independently, communicating more clearly and managing daily routines with more independence.

“Every person we interacted with made us feel like Steve wasn’t ‘just another patient’. They treated us like family—people they really care about,” says his wife, Sharon.

TIRR Memorial Hermann and Falling Forward Foundation jointly announced a new partnership designed to help patients continue critical outpatient rehabilitation after insurance benefits have been exhausted.

Through this collaboration, Falling Forward Foundation will provide grant funding to support select TIRR Memorial Hermann patients recovering from catastrophic medical events such as stroke, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. The funding will help eliminate gaps in care that often occur when therapy coverage ends, helping to ensure patients can continue progressing toward maximum recovery and independence.
