Katelyn is the Director of Philanthropy at Guide Dogs of Texas, a non profit that trains guide dogs for visually impaired Texans. RCTX is a proud partner to the Guide Dogs of Texas program, opening doors to greater independence, confidence, connection, and opportunity to those living with visual impairments.

October Image of the Month features a Chorioretinal and Optic Nerve Coloboma.

Vision is a complex puzzle, and sometimes, a piece is missing right from the start. A chorioretinal and optic disc coloboma occurs during fetal development when the eye doesn’t fully close, leaving a gap in the uvea, retina, or optic nerve. Because this is a congenital condition (present at birth), the impact on vision varies wildly. Some people have near-perfect sight, while others face significant challenges depending on the size and location of the gap. While we can’t "fill in" the missing tissue, management is all about maximizing the vision that is present and protecting the eyes from secondary issues like retinal detachment.

Meet Charlie Zhang, MD, a board-certified medical and surgical retina specialist bringing extensive training, research experience, and a passion for personalized care to RCTX!

Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Dr. Zhang completed his medical degree and ophthalmology residency at the University at Buffalo, where he served as chief resident. He then completed his vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

Throughout his training, Dr. Zhang has remained deeply involved in research, authoring more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and presenting at national meetings.

For Dr. Zhang, staying at the forefront of his field is all about providing patients with thoughtful, individualized care and access to the latest advancements in retina.

Outside the clinic, he continues to stay active in research and education while settling into his new home here in Texas.

Meet David Mora-Boellstorff, MD, a board-certified ophthalmologist and retina surgeon returning home to the community that helped shape him!

A native of Bryan, Texas, Dr. Mora grew up with a love of science and the outdoors, inspired in part by his parents, who taught at Texas A&M University. He went on to study biomedical engineering at The University of Texas at Austin before earning his medical degree from McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.

After completing advanced ophthalmology and retina training in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, Dr. Mora is proud to return to Bryan/College Station to care for patients close to home.

Known for his thoughtful and personal approach, he believes great care starts with making sure patients feel informed, comfortable, and confident throughout their journey.

Outside of medicine, you can find him birdwatching, hiking, skiing, playing chess, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.

Meet Sean M. Rodriguez, MD, a board-certified retina surgeon and proud native Texan serving the San Antonio community!

Raised in Corpus Christi, Dr. Rodriguez attended Amherst College, where he captained the men’s tennis team and was part of a national championship team. He later returned to Texas and spent a year serving under-resourced schools right here in San Antonio.

After earning his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Rodriguez completed advanced ophthalmology and retina training at the University of Iowa and University of Colorado.

Now back home in Texas, he’s excited to care for patients in the San Antonio area and bring his passion for exceptional, personalized retinal care to the RCTX family.
