August Image of the Month features Peripheral Exudative Hemorrhagic Chorioretinopathy.

This is a classic photo of peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy (PEHCR), which is when abnormal blood vessels grow and bleed in the peripheral retina. Fortunately for this patient, their disease is not affecting their vision. In more advanced cases, the bleeding can spread to involve the central vision or can cause a vitreous hemorrhage. Oftentimes, observation is sufficient, though advanced cases can benefit from anti-VEGF medications.

Congratulations to Antonia Norris, one of our Core Value Award recipients, for exemplifying Hard Work!

Antonia was recognized for her unwavering dedication to ensuring patients receive the care they need, especially when every minute matters. When a patient experienced sudden vision loss in their only seeing eye and required emergency surgery, Antonia went above and beyond to help make it happen. She worked tirelessly to coordinate urgent cardiac clearance, connect with the patient's nursing facility and care team, and ensure everything was in place so the patient could get to the operating room in time.

Antonia's determination, compassion, and commitment to putting patients first made a life-changing difference. Thank you for living out our Hard Work core value every day.

Congratulations, Antonia!

Your skin isn't the only thing that needs protection from the sun. ☀️🕶️

July is UV Safety Month, a reminder that your eyes are exposed to harmful UV rays every time you're outdoors. Over time, UV exposure can increase your risk for things like cataracts and Age-Related Macular Degeneration, while intense exposure can even cause a painful "sunburn" of the eye.

Before you head outside, remember:
• Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
• Add a wide-brimmed hat for extra protection.
• Protect your eyes all year long, not just during the summer.

Diabetes is a systemic disease that can affect nearly every part of the body, including the eyes. Early detection and collaboration between healthcare providers play an important role in helping patients preserve their vision.

This past weekend, Dr. Carson Petrash presented at the 20th Annual Diabetes Conference in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he spoke with primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, and nurses about the impact of diabetes on the retina.

By working together across specialties, we can strengthen co-management, improve communication, and help patients receive the comprehensive care they need to protect both their overall health and their vision.
