Diabetes is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in adults. The most common reason is diabetic retinopathy, a condition in which high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye). Over time, these blood vessels may leak, become blocked, or grow abnormally, leading to vision loss.

How diabetes can cause blindness:

1. Diabetic retinopathy: Damage to retinal blood vessels causes bleeding, swelling, and scarring that can permanently affect vision.

2. Diabetic macular edema (DME): Fluid leaks into the macula (the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision), causing blurred or distorted vision.

3. Cataracts: People with diabetes tend to develop cataracts earlier than those without diabetes.

4. Glaucoma: Diabetes increases the risk of glaucoma, which damages the optic nerve and can lead to irreversible vision loss.

Warning signs

Early diabetic eye disease often has no symptoms. As it progresses, symptoms may include:

- Blurry vision

- Floaters (spots or cobwebs)

- Difficulty seeing at night

- Dark or empty areas in vision

- Sudden vision loss (an emergency)

The risk of severe vision loss can be greatly reduced by:

- Keeping blood sugar within target range

- Controlling blood pressure and cholesterol

- Avoiding smoking

- Having a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year, even if your vision seems normal

- Seeking prompt treatment if diabetic retinopathy is detected.

πŸ’™ JUNE IS MEN'S HEALTH MONTH πŸ’™

Men's health is about more than avoiding illnessβ€”it's about thriving physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

As a holistic practitioner, I believe true wellness comes from addressing the whole person, not just symptoms. When men prioritize their health, they build stronger families, healthier communities, and brighter futures.

βœ… Mental Wellness – Manage stress and build emotional resilience
βœ… Physical Vitality – Support energy, strength, and hormone balance
βœ… Preventative Care – Catch health concerns before they become serious
βœ… Holistic Balance – Nurture mind, body, and spirit together
βœ… Longevity & Quality of Life – Live longer, healthier, and with purpose

Too many men wait until something is wrong before seeking help. This month, let's change that narrative.

πŸ”Ή Schedule preventive screenings
πŸ”Ή Prioritize quality sleep
πŸ”Ή Move your body daily
πŸ”Ή Manage stress intentionally
πŸ”Ή Nourish your body with real food

Your health is your greatest investment.

Let's normalize men taking care of themselves.

"Men, what's one health goal you're committing to this month?" πŸ‘‡πŸΎπŸ’™

πŸ’Š The Hidden Side Effect of Many Medications: Nutrient Depletion

Many people take medications every day without realizing that some prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs can gradually deplete essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants your body needs to function optimally.

Over time, these nutrient losses may contribute to symptoms such as:

⚑ Fatigue and low energy
🧠 Brain fog and poor concentration
πŸ˜” Mood changes
πŸ’ͺ Muscle weakness or cramps
πŸ’‡ Hair thinning
🦠 Weakened immunity

Common examples include:

β€’ Antibiotics β†’ Folic Acid, Iron, Vitamins A, D, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Vitamin K

β€’ Metformin β†’ Vitamin B12

β€’ Statins β†’ CoQ10

β€’ Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) β†’ Magnesium, Iron, Calcium, Vitamin B12

β€’ Birth Control Pills β†’ B Vitamins, Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamin C

β€’ NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Naproxen) β†’ Iron, Folate, Vitamin C

This does NOT mean you should stop taking your medications. It means you should be proactive about monitoring your nutritional status and supporting your body's needs.

At iFlourish Health & Wellness Institute, we help uncover potential nutrient deficiencies and address the root causes of symptoms through Functional Medicine testing, personalized nutrition, and targeted supplementation.

WEIGHT LOSS IS MORE THAN CALORIES πŸ‘€

If you’ve been eating β€œhealthy,” exercising, and still struggling to lose weight, your body may be dealing with deeper imbalances.

In Functional Medicine, we look for the ROOT CAUSE instead of masking symptoms.

Here are some hidden factors that may be blocking your weight loss progress:

πŸ”Έ Chronic Stress
High cortisol levels can increase belly fat, cravings, inflammation, and insulin resistance.

πŸ”Έ Poor Sleep
Sleep deprivation disrupts hunger hormones (ghrelin & leptin), slows metabolism, and increases cravings for sugar and carbs.

πŸ”Έ Hormonal Imbalances
Conditions like thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, PCOS, estrogen dominance, and menopause can make weight loss difficult.

πŸ”Έ Gut Health Issues
Poor gut bacteria balance, bloating, constipation, food sensitivities, and inflammation can affect metabolism and fat storage.

πŸ”Έ Nutrient Deficiencies
Low iron, vitamin D, magnesium, B12, and omega-3 levels can impact energy, metabolism, and fat burning.

πŸ”Έ Blood Sugar Imbalances
Frequent spikes in blood sugar can lead to fat storage, fatigue, and increased hunger.

πŸ”Έ Toxin Overload & Inflammation
Environmental toxins, processed foods, and chronic inflammation may interfere with hormones and metabolism.

Your body is always communicating. The goal is not just weight loss β€” it’s restoring balance, improving metabolism, and helping your body function optimally.

At iFlourish Health & Wellness, we use a personalized Functional Medicine approach to help uncover WHY your body is struggling.
