𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, a time to celebrate the achievements of children and families living with sickle cell disease.

Meet 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮, an 11-year-old entrepreneur, Girl Scout, gymnast and musician whose journey shows that sickle cell disease is only one part of who she is.

Diagnosed as an infant, Carlina has faced hospital stays, pain crises and missed activities, yet she continues to pursue her passions. What started as a neighborhood lemonade stand in Louisiana has grown into a successful business. After moving to Texas, she connected with Lemonade Day Houston, created her own brand and flavors, and earned second place in a competition. Today, she continues growing her business while staying active with the Houston Children's Chorus, gymnastics and other activities she loves.

This summer, she attended Camp Cell-A-Bration, a weeklong camp for children with sickle cell disease, where she enjoyed reconnecting with friends. She also made special memories with her family during a Make-A-Wish trip to Walt Disney World.

Her mother credits the support of 𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗽𝗲, 𝗠𝗗, 𝗣𝗵𝗗, and the care team for helping Carlina thrive through every stage of her journey. “Dr. Fasipe is very hands-on and helps with just about any request I may have. As a parent, that kind of support is a blessing.”

Carlina's message to others is simple: " 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗸, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹."

💜 September is 𝗜𝗧𝗣 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, an opportunity to recognize children and families affected by immune thrombocytopenia (ITP).

This month, we honor patients like 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗶 and her family, along with the many others navigating platelet disorders. We also recognize the care teams who help guide these families through diagnosis and treatment.

As part of ITP Awareness Month, join us in wearing purple for on 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟱 to help raise awareness for ITP and other platelet disorders.

ℹ️ ITP is an autoimmune condition that can cause low platelet counts, leading to an increased risk of bruising, bleeding, and fatigue. While some children recover over time, others require ongoing treatment and long-term follow-up. Raising awareness can help families recognize symptoms earlier and connect with specialized care when needed.

💙 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗰𝘆𝘁𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵.

When 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗼𝗻 was just 18 months old, his family noticed he was constantly thirsty, drinking far more water than other children his age and experiencing ongoing stomach issues. Finding answers took time, and after more than 10 medical visits, he was diagnosed with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), a rare disease his mom, Kirsten, had never heard of before.

After a scan during his third ER visit revealed the cause of his symptoms, Grayson was transported by ambulance to Texas Children's Medical Center. There, his family met the team that would care for him over the next two and a half years, including 𝗢𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦. 𝗘𝗰𝗸𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻, 𝗠𝗗, and 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮 𝗕. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻, 𝗠𝗗. Kirsten says their guidance and support helped her family move forward with confidence.

Today, Grayson is getting ready to turn four. He attends school, loves puzzles and coloring, and cheers on the Astros. ⚾

His mom shares this message for other families: "After diagnosis, it may feel impossible, and it’s a lot to take in, but on the other side of it, you get to see your kid be a normal kid."

ℹ️ Histiocytosis is a rare group of disorders in which abnormal immune cells build up in the body and can affect the skin, bones, lungs and other organs. Because symptoms can resemble more common childhood conditions, awareness and timely evaluation can make a critical difference for patients and families.

To celebrate , the Kinder Children's Cancer Center is sharing new 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. 💛 From a teen athlete's return to competitive soccer to a childhood cancer survivor now caring for cancer patients as a nurse, these six stories highlight the unique experiences, resilience, and achievements of children and families facing cancer.

𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘆: After undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, specialized testing revealed a rare mutation that enabled Audrey to qualify for a clinical trial.

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗻: Following six months of treatment for acute myeloid leukemia, Brinn achieved her goal of returning to competitive soccer and is back on the field doing what she loves.

𝗞𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗼𝗻: After battling Ewing sarcoma twice, Kelvon is back on the playground and dreaming of a future in medicine.

𝗞𝘆𝗹𝗶𝗻: Diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia, Kylin continues treatment with a personalized care plan designed around her unique needs.

𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻: More than 20 years after his first osteosarcoma diagnosis, London recently completed his seventh round of treatment and is focused on what's next.

𝗣𝗲𝘆𝘁𝗼𝗻: A childhood leukemia survivor, Peyton now works as a nurse on the same hospital floor where she once received treatment.

🐶💙 August 26 is National Dog Day, part of National Dog Month, and we’re celebrating with a video featuring our dedicated facility dog 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻, and the difference he makes through the 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝘄𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺.

A valued member of the care team, Lawton works alongside Child Life Specialists 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻, 𝗖𝗖𝗟𝗦 and 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝘁𝘇, 𝗖𝗖𝗟𝗦, who help make these meaningful interactions possible for patients and families each day.

Lawton, who is specially trained to work in a pediatric hospital setting, helps children feel more at ease during their time in the hospital. We're grateful for the difference he makes for children and families each day. 🐾
