🍋 Our recent Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation event enabled young entrepreneurs in the Inpatient and Bone Marrow Transplant Units to become business owners for a day. Patients gained real-world skills by running their own lemonade stands, while providing refreshments for staff, families, and providers.

After taking a ‘loan’ from a bank set up by staff, the children purchased lemonade kits using play money. As they served nurses and other staff at their stand, patients practiced practical skills such as money management, arithmetic and problem-solving. The event concluded with a prize shop, where patients could exchange their earnings for rewards ranging from candy to LEGO sets.

On June 24, our Center hosted its 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Presentations during the event highlighted advances in sickle cell care, research, education and global collaboration 🔬🎓🤝 .

Opening remarks were delivered by 𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗽𝗲, 𝗠𝗗, 𝗣𝗵𝗗, who focused on the significance of World Sickle Cell Day and the importance of continued education and advocacy in supporting individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease.

𝗩𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗝𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗗𝗡𝗣, 𝗥𝗡, 𝗡𝗘𝗔-𝗕𝗖 spoke about Texas Children’s commitment to advancing sickle cell awareness through innovative care, research and education. This commitment was reinforced by 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗲 𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗮𝗻, 𝗠𝗗, 𝗠𝗠𝗦𝗰, who shared how Texas Children’s growth as a leader in sickle cell care is helping address the need for earlier diagnosis and greater access to care worldwide.

Rice University PhD candidate 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻 presented her research focused on advancing sickle cell diagnosis. She and her fellow investigators are developing a rapid, non-invasive test designed for low-resource settings, supporting broader efforts to strengthen screening programs and expand access to care across Africa.

The celebration concluded by recognizing the organizations whose support helps drive progress in sickle cell care. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success and for your continued dedication to advancing care, research and advocacy for the sickle cell community.

July is 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗮 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵. Watch 16 year old Angelina Dilcher share her journey with osteosarcoma and how the support she received at Texas Children’s Hospital shaped her experience.

Angelina was in seventh grade when severe arm pain led to imaging and a diagnosis of osteosarcoma. She was referred to our 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝘂𝗺𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺, where she soon began treatment through chemotherapy and a complex reconstructive surgery.

A key member of her care team is 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝘁𝘇𝗸𝗼, 𝗠𝗗, who served as her primary provider.

Osteosarcoma is the most common bone cancer in children and adolescents. Treatment often involves chemotherapy and surgery, and early diagnosis is essential. Angelina’s experience reflects how the Bone Tumor Program ensures that children diagnosed with osteosarcoma receive rapid access to the specialized care this aggressive disease requires. The program’s coordinated, research driven approach supports children fighting cancer or serious blood disorders throughout their treatment.

Our Center’s 𝟮𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 brought experts together to advance research and care for children living with cancer or serious blood disorders.

Keynote presentations from 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗠𝗗, 𝗠𝗛𝗦 and 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗼 𝗝𝗿., 𝗠𝗗, 𝗠𝗦𝗖 highlighted advances in blood and marrow transplantation and innovative approaches to hemophilia care, exemplifying how scientific discovery drives advances in patient care. 🧬

Throughout the symposium, researchers presented findings spanning pediatric oncology, hematology, transplantation, cellular therapies and other areas focused on improving outcomes for children and families. More than 45 poster presentations showcased the breadth of research that is underway at the Center.

The symposium also provided a forum for faculty and trainees to share research, exchange ideas and build collaborations that can advance care.

Joining the NMDP registry takes about 5 minutes and a simple cheek swab, and if you're ever matched with a patient, you may be asked to donate blood stem cells—most often through a process similar to donating plasma.

For some patients with leukemia and lymphoma, sickle cell disease, aplastic anemia, and other serious blood disorders, a bone marrow or stem cell transplant may be the most effective path to a cure. Because patients are more likely to match with donors who share similar ancestry, people from all racial and ethnic backgrounds are needed to ensure more patients find a match.

If you're between 18 and 40 and eligible to join, registering takes just a few minutes and could help a child or adult find a potentially life-saving match.
