Employment: Highly individualized and customized job placement, coaching, and supported employment services provided to members and outside referrals. Volunteerism: Assisting members to give back to the community while exploring their career interests and learning valuable work skills. 🤟🏻AAC AWARENESS MONTH 🤟🏻

At Summerhouse, we are proud to support our members in a variety of communication methods!

Angie, Community Program Director, shared: At Summerhouse Houston, we believe that every voice matters, and communication goes far beyond spoken words. Our members express themselves in many different ways, including verbal communication, gestures, facial expressions, sign language, visual supports, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. We recognize that communication looks different for everyone, and our goal is to create an environment where each member feels heard, understood, and empowered to express their wants, needs, ideas, and choices. It's not about how someone communicates, but making sure they have the opportunity to be heard.

🌟Member Spotlight: Dessarae🌟

Dessarae has come such a long way in her Summerhouse journey! She loves fashion, shopping, art, and spending time with her friends. She has made wonderful strides in her independence, including using transportation on her own, building her communication skills, and taking on new responsibilities. Dessarae is hardworking, determined, and never afraid to show off her personality! Whether she's volunteering at Kids' Meals, enjoying a boxing class, or working on an art project, we love seeing her confidence and independence continue to grow!

⭐FALL FORWARD CAREER & WORK READINESS EXPERIENCE⭐

Summerhouse is excited to launch our new series of Vocational Adjustment Training (VAT) and Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) courses. This series aims to help students and young adults build career readiness skills, explore employment interests, strengthen workplace competencies, develop financial literacy, and prepare for postsecondary education and employment opportunities!

We are excited to celebrate our September Affirmation Winners. These individuals are selected by the rest of our Summerhouse community for going above and beyond as a member of our team.

🥇Ashley brings so much joy to Summerhouse! She is constantly showing kindness to our staff and her fellow members, and we all appreciate her for that. She is a known music lover, and can be found singing and dancing frequently. Congratulations, Ashley!

🥇 September was a BIG month, and Abby was right in the middle of it all - from helping make our record-breaking Gala happen and representing Summerhouse at resource fairs to managing volunteers and keeping all of our marketing moving. She jumped in wherever needed and handled a lot of moving pieces with a positive attitude and a willingness to just get it done. We’re so grateful to have her on Team Summerhouse. Congratulations, Abby - so well deserved!

🥇Andy keeps a big smile on everyone's faces with his many jokes and a positive thumbs up. Recently, he has been working hard to reach his goals, but that does not stop him from continuing to bring positivity and a few laughs to his group! Andy - we are so proud of you!

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, but a Summerhouse, we recognize the importance of employment year-round. Employment means belonging, confidence, and a sense of independence.

Our Employment Program staff works hard to build relationships with businesses to create inclusive opportunities for our clients, while also building supports to help our clients achieve their vocational roles.

While we are proud of our staff and community partners, we all know that the ones to be celebrated are our amazing clients who show up each and everyday willing to learn, work hard, and keep going through moments of frustration.
