Tetris fan?!? I am!!
Does it match? 🤔 Today my friend and I took a self monitoring activity to a whole new level. Tetris style!

Why?
✅ Builds independence: Kids learn to notice and correct their own speech instead of waiting for the therapist to give feedback.
✅ Moves skills beyond therapy: Self-monitoring helps children use their target sounds during play, conversations, school, and everyday interactions.
✅ Supports generalization: A child may produce a sound correctly in structured practice but still need to recognize and use it in less predictable situations.
Improves carryover: The goal is for accurate speech to become something the child can monitor throughout the day, not just during speech sessions.
✅ Builds confidence: Recognizing “That didn’t sound right, let me try again” gives children a sense of control over their communication.

One thing working and living with little humans has taught me over the past 30 years is that communication, talking, practicing speech sounds can not be a priority if the child’s nervous system is in a non optimal state.
Really, you’re wasting your and the child’s time if you’re working on the same thing day after day and the child’s nervous system is not ready.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a good open-ended toy. But connection doesn’t always look like traditional “play.” 🌈

Especially when working with autistic children, I’m mindful that every child may engage with toys, people, and their environment differently. The goal isn’t to make a child play the “expected” way, it’s to find **their** way of connecting and build from there.

Meet them where they are. Follow their interests. Join their play.

Because connection happens in play * but play doesn’t always look the way we expect.

So your kid wants to bring their toy from home to speech? 🤔
I’m here for it. I encourage it! Let’s go!

I’m cleaning up my photo album and looking at all the visitors I’ve had over the past couple of years. When your child brings a toy from home, there’s so much we can show, share, and talk about.

Sometimes our visitors sit and watch and other times they take center stage. 😎

And yes, we can absolutely turn that favorite toy into a therapy tool!

Here are just a few ways I might use it:

🗣️ **Build conversation skills** — Tell me about your toy, what it does, where it came from, or why you like it.

🎯 **Target speech sounds** — Use the toy to practice target words, phrases, or sentences while keeping speech practice meaningful.

🔤 **Build language** — Describe the toy using colors, sizes, actions, locations, attributes, and more.

🔄 **Practice turn-taking** — The child and the toy can take turns, or we can use the toy as part of a shared play routine.

🎭 **Practice pretend play & storytelling** — What does the toy do? Where is it going? What happens next?

👩‍🏫 **Teach the toy!** — Have your child show their toy how to do something, give it directions, or “teach” it their target words. This can be a fun way to practice expressive language, sequencing, and speech production.

The best therapy materials aren’t always the ones on the therapy shelf. Sometimes they’re the things your child already **loves**. ❤️
