Most people learn about OCD as a stereotype: handwashing, lock-checking, the visible rituals that pop culture made shorthand for the disorder.
While the presentations above may be OCD, the disorder can show up in so many ways outside of these areas. There are various forms of OCD that are also distressing, one's that may be the most taboo and hidden. Patients with harm OCD, sexual intrusive thoughts, or scrupulosity often go years without understanding what they are experiencing because of inadequately trained providers, stigma and shame.
They are all OCD. They are all treatable. And no one has to carry them alone.
