American Society of Emergency Radiology

American Society of Emergency Radiology We provide resources, set standards of care and promote research in Emergency Radiology (ERAD) and emergent patient care in the US and around the world.

In 1987, while attending Harvard’s Emergency Radiology course, eight radiologists met to discuss the formation of a new group to define and disseminate the body of knowledge unique to emergency radiology. The American Society of Emergency Radiology was formed in 1988 from this small nucleus and has steadily increased in numbers and interest, providing consultation to radiologists and corporations

who deal with emergency radiology challenges. Since 1995 the Society membership has sponsored a new journal of practical imaging, Emergency Radiology, in which peer reviewed articles are presented and discussed.

Title:
Radiographic corrosion and clinical outcomes in pediatric esophageal button battery impaction: a retrospective reproducibility study

Purpose:
Radiographic corrosion of impacted esophageal button batteries has recently been proposed as a potential predictor of severe injury. We aimed to reproduce these findings and evaluate the association between radiographic corrosion and clinical outcomes in a pediatric population treated at a tertiary referral center.

Tuesday Journal Article Spotlight:
Title:
Effect of standardized reporting template on turnaround times of on-call radiology residents’ preliminary interpretation of spinal cord or cauda equina compression

Purpose:
Prompt and accurate diagnosis of spinal cord compression (SCC) or cauda equina compression (CEC) is of great clinical importance. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of a standardized reporting template (SRT) on report turnaround time (RTAT) and performance of on-call radiology residents’ preliminary interpretation (PI) for the detection of SCC/CEC on after-hour spine MRI studies.

Tuesday Journal Article Spotlight:
Title:
Diagnosis of acute appendicitis at a pediatric emergency department within a general hospital

Purpose:
Ultrasound (US) has evolved as the principal imaging modality in the evaluation of pediatric appendicitis due to inherent advantages but may vary in performance based on setting. Rapid focused Magnetic Resonance Imaging (rapid MRI) is a feasible alternative, but emergency department (ED) length of stay (LOS) may be impacted. We wished to determine the performance and LOS of US and rapid MRI in a pediatric ED within a general hospital in the evaluation of appendicitis.

Tuesday Journal Article Spotlight:
Title: Computed tomography scan evaluation of Globe rupture using a novel mnemonic : a single center experience

Purpose:
Globe rupture presents a diagnostic challenge because of potentially vision-threatening outcomes. Although computed tomography (CT) is critical for assessment, a structured interpretation approach is often lacking. This study introduces the novel “FLAP CONE” mnemonic to assist radiologists in evaluating globe rupture.
