We provide resources, set standards of care and promote research in Emergency Radiology (ERAD) and emergent patient care in the US and around the world.

In 1987, while attending Harvard’s Emergency Radiology course, eight radiologists met to discuss the formation of a new group to define and disseminate the body of knowledge unique to emergency radiology. The American Society of Emergency Radiology was formed in 1988 from this small nucleus and has steadily increased in numbers and interest, providing consultation to radiologists and corporations who deal with emergency radiology challenges. Since 1995 the Society membership has sponsored a new journal of practical imaging, Emergency Radiology, in which peer reviewed articles are presented and discussed.

Title:
Routine repeat computed tomography of the head in patients with mild traumatic brain injury: is it really necessary?

Purpose:
Computed tomography of the head (CTH) is the primary imaging modality for traumatic brain injury (TBI), but the necessity of routine repeat CTH (RRCTH) in mild TBI remains unclear. We aim to assess whether RRCTH within 24–48 h after mild TBI influences clinical decision-making and patient management.

Title:
Improved interobserver agreement for perihematomal edema measurement using dual-layer spectral CT electron density imaging in intracerebral hemorrhage

Purpose:
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a subtype of stroke associated with high morbidity and mortality. Perihematomal edema (PHE), the swelling of brain tissue surrounding hemorrhage, is an independent predictor of risk stratification and prognosis. Therefore, accurate identification and measurement of PHE volume is crucial for clinical decision-making. Currently, PHE measurement relies on conventional computed tomography (CT), which has limited ability to delineate edema boundaries. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate whether electron density (ED) images derived from dual-layer spectral CT improve interobserver agreement and boundary visualization in PHE volume measurement compared with images derived from conventional CT.

Title:
Thoracolumbar extension-distraction injuries during radiologic transfers in ankylosing spinal disorders: a case series

Purpose:
Thoracolumbar (TL) extension-distraction injuries (EDI) are unstable injuries. Patients with ankylosing spinal disorders, such as diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS), are particularly susceptible, even with minimal trauma during routine inpatient care such as bed to table transfers for imaging studies.
