American Society of Emergency Radiology

American Society of Emergency Radiology We provide resources, set standards of care and promote research in Emergency Radiology (ERAD) and emergent patient care in the US and around the world.

In 1987, while attending Harvardโ€™s Emergency Radiology course, eight radiologists met to discuss the formation of a new group to define and disseminate the body of knowledge unique to emergency radiology. The American Society of Emergency Radiology was formed in 1988 from this small nucleus and has steadily increased in numbers and interest, providing consultation to radiologists and corporations

who deal with emergency radiology challenges. Since 1995 the Society membership has sponsored a new journal of practical imaging, Emergency Radiology, in which peer reviewed articles are presented and discussed.

Title:
Ruptured intracranial dermoid cysts: Imaging at acute presentation and follow-up

Purpose:
Intracranial dermoid cysts are rare, benign congenital lesions that can rupture spontaneously, leading to dissemination of fatty contents within the subarachnoid or ventricular spaces. Though often asymptomatic, rupture can produce a range of neurological symptoms and distinct imaging features. We aim to evaluate the clinical presentation, imaging characteristics, and outcomes of patients with ruptured intracranial dermoid cysts.

Tuesday Journal Article Spotlight:
Title:
Appropriateness of imaging requests for pediatric traumatic brain injury in the emergency department: a retrospective cross-sectional study

Purpose:
Pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) accounts for a significant proportion of emergency department (ED) visits, with an estimated global incidence of up to 200 cases per 100,000 children each year. Despite clinical guidelines, imaging is often overused, particularly in mild cases, exposing children to unnecessary radiation. In Latin America, evidence regarding the appropriateness of imaging requests (AIR) and their diagnostic value remains scarce.

Tuesday Journal Article Spotlight:

Title: After-hours CT report discrepancies: evaluating radiology resident performance

Purpose: Several prior international studies have examined radiology resident reporting discrepancy rates, with a range of 1โ€“10% quoted. Limited data exists specifically for the after-hours setting, where residents are often staffed at training institutions and report most, or all, studies. Our aims are to determine after-hours resident CT report discrepancy rates at our institution, determine the clinical significance of discrepancies, and assess factors affecting resident performance.
