CMHC Topic of the Month: Practicing Self-Care

What is self-care?

Self-care is practices we actively choose to do to take care of our physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well-being.
It is also any activities that help us cope with challenges in our academic, work, or social lives.

CMHC Topic of the Month: Sleep

This month, we’ve focused on sleep hygiene. There are many pieces that go into it and we hope that you’ve reflected on at least one element of sleep hygiene that is salient to you. Two key takeaways are that sleep is important for your physical and mental health and sleep hygiene extends beyond laying down and closing your eyes, encompassing elements like environment and daily routine, as well. We hope you take time, if you haven’t already, to reflect on your current routine and how modifications may improve your overall sleep hygiene. Keep in mind that as seasons and responsibilities change, your routine also will! Sleep hygiene is an ongoing conversation.

CMHC Topic of the Month: Sleep

Aside from feeling rested, sleeping well can have all kinds of physical and mental benefits. Sleep is an important part of our rest and recovery cycle. As much as we might like to just keep powering through sometimes, it’s not sustainable. Interestingly enough, your body actually needs to rest to be able to keep going in the first place. Are you having a hard time with sleep because of a racing mind or thoughts keeping you up at night? We’d love to support you at the Counseling and Mental Health Center! We are located in SSCB3.103, you can call to schedule an appointment at (281) 283 – 2580 or walk in to schedule one. We are open Monday from 9am-5pm and Tuesday-Friday: 8am-5pm. CMHC Topic of the Month: Sleep

In our last post, we talked about tips to make your environment more peaceful for sleep. Today, we’re focusing on tips for what you can do during the day that’ll help you sleep better at night. Our routines are all connected, and we often thrive with structure. Of course, this looks different for every person, their individual needs, and their responsibilities. Still, it is worth looking through this list and taking inventory of how well you’re achieving each of these goals. What is one realistic and practical addition you can make to your current routine to improve the overall quality of your sleep?

CMHC Topic of the Month: Sleep

Sleep is very important! It goes far beyond simply laying down and closing your eyes. In fact, our sleep routine begins far before we even attempt to sleep. Tonight, take inventory of your habits before bed as well as the environment you’re sleeping in. How can you quiet, calm, and soothe your space to set yourself up for a good night of rest? Take a look at the tips above for some simple suggestions to make your space more sleep-promoting. If you’re struggling with your mental health in a way that is impacting sleep, you are not alone! If you’d like support from the Counseling and Mental Health Center, we are located in SSCB3.103, you can call to schedule an appointment at (281) 283 – 2580 or walk in to schedule one. We are open Monday from 9am-5pm and Tuesday-Friday: 8am-5pm. You can also find more information on our webstite at uhcl.edu/cmhc

CMHC Topic of the Month: Sleep

There are little steps we can take that make a huge difference in the quality of our sleep. As you think about what sleep habits work best for you, don’t forget that everyone sleeps differently. Some people sleep early, some a bit later. Some need music, some need quiet. What matters is that your routine makes you feel safe and rested. There’s no “one way” to sleep just soft ways that work for you

CMHC Topic of the Month: Sleep

Sometimes when we’re feeling stressed, the first thing to go out the window is our basic needs – we may find ourselves eating more junk, sleeping less, drinking less water, among other things. It can be difficult to sustain the momentum of taking care of ourselves when experiencing decision fatigue. This is why it’s so important to build in a routine of healthy habits into our lifestyle, to promote our ability to sleep – particularly when we’ve already exhausted our decision-making centers. This can look like restricting caffeine usage after a certain time in the day (or total usage), reading before bed instead of scrolling on social media, and exercising during the day for overall health (and to tire yourself out!). Sleep hygiene looks different for all of us, so be realistic about what fits in your schedule best.
