Dr. Jana recently had a patient ask about using the hearing-aid features in his AirPods Pro, and the biggest thing to understand is who they’re actually designed to help.

For someone with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss, AirPods Pro 2 can provide hearing assistance and may be useful in situations where you notice you’re struggling to follow conversation. But they aren’t a replacement for prescription hearing aids when your hearing needs go beyond what they can provide.

A huge, busy restaurant. Conversations everywhere. Mariachi music overhead. Basically, the exact kind of environment where many people with hearing loss say, “I can hear, but I can’t understand what anyone is saying.”

Sometimes the best solution isn’t the standard solution. 👂

This patient has a unique ear anatomy, and traditional earmolds tend to put pressure on the exact same spot—making them uncomfortable to wear.

So Dr. Jana had an idea.

Instead of simply remaking the same mold again, she took a new impression and is working with the manufacturer to see if they can modify the design and create relief around that problem area. This is one of the parts of audiology Dr. Jana loves most: problem-solving. Looking at the person in front of you, understanding why something isn’t working, and finding a solution specifically for them.

Will the new mold work?

More often, it sneaks into the little moments.

The TV gets turned up a little louder. Restaurants become harder to follow. You start asking people to repeat themselves or leave conversations feeling more tired than you used to.

Those subtle changes are worth paying attention to. And here’s something we want more people to know: you don’t have to wait until your hearing feels “bad enough” to have it checked. A hearing evaluation gives us a baseline, helps us understand how you’re hearing today, and allows us to monitor changes over time.
