WHAT IS EMOTIONAL FLOODING?

Have you ever been in a difficult conversation and suddenly felt like you couldn’t think clearly?

Your heart starts racing.
Your body feels tense.
You struggle to find the right words.
You become overwhelmed and either shut down, get defensive, or feel an intense need to leave the conversation.

This can sometimes be referred to as emotional flooding.

Emotional flooding happens when emotions become so intense that it becomes harder to think clearly, communicate effectively, and stay engaged in the moment.
That’s why continuing to argue when emotions are extremely heightened isn’t always productive.

Learning to recognize your early signs of overwhelm can give you an opportunity to pause, regulate, and return to the conversation when you’re better able to communicate.

Therapy can help you identify emotional patterns, develop regulation skills, and learn healthier ways to navigate difficult conversations and conflict.

Therapy is a process

Therapy isn’t about having everything figured out after one session. It’s a process of learning, growing, and developing a deeper understanding of yourself.

That process can include:
🌸 Creating emotional awareness
🌸 Learning healthy coping skills
🌸 Building self-understanding
🌸 Strengthening emotional resilience

Progress may look different from week to week. Sometimes it’s recognizing a pattern you didn’t notice before. Sometimes it’s responding differently to a situation that once overwhelmed you. And sometimes, it’s simply giving yourself the space to process what you’re feeling.

Therapy can help you better understand yourself while building tools to navigate anxiety, stress, relationships, and life’s challenges with greater confidence.

WHEN “GOOD ENOUGH” NEVER FEELS GOOD ENOUGH

You finish the project.
Then check it again.
And again.

You notice the one tiny mistake instead of everything you did well.

Someone compliments your work, but you're already thinking about what you could have done better.
Perfectionism isn't always about wanting everything to be perfect.

Sometimes it can look like procrastinating because you're afraid you'll get it wrong, struggling to make decisions, comparing yourself to others, or setting expectations for yourself that you would never expect someone else to meet.

The goal doesn't have to be lowering your standards.

It can be learning that your worth isn't determined by how perfectly you perform.

Therapy can help you recognize perfectionistic thought patterns, explore where they come from, and develop healthier expectations for yourself.

YOU MAY NOT NEED MORE MOTIVATION. YOU MAY NEED A BREAK.

You keep telling yourself:

“I need to get it together.”
“I need to be more disciplined.”
“I’m just being lazy.”

But what if the problem isn’t motivation?

When you’ve been under stress for a long time, even normal responsibilities can start to feel harder. You may struggle to concentrate, procrastinate more, feel easily irritated, or have less energy for things that normally wouldn’t bother you.

Sometimes pushing yourself harder isn't the answer.

You may need to pay attention to how much you’ve been carrying without giving yourself an opportunity to recover.

Therapy can help you recognize patterns of stress and overwhelm and develop healthier ways to manage life’s demands.

Anxiety doesn’t always look like a panic attack.

Sometimes it looks like rereading a text before you send it, wondering if someone is upset with you, replaying a conversation from hours ago, second-guessing a decision you already made, or preparing yourself for something that hasn’t even happened.

When these thought patterns become frequent, they can make it difficult to trust yourself, tolerate uncertainty, and stay present in what’s actually happening.

Learning to recognize when anxiety is influencing your thoughts can help you pause and ask: “What do I actually know right now?”

Therapy can help you recognize anxious thought patterns and build tools to navigate anxiety, uncertainty, stress, and life’s challenges with greater confidence.

Ready to better understand the thoughts behind your anxiety?
