If being a “friend” to your child feels like losing your authority… that fear makes sense. A lot of us were raised to believe respect had to be scared into you and that closeness was a crack in the armor.

So we swing. One day we’re laying down the law so hard we hear our own parent in our voice. The next, the guilt hits and we let everything slide.

But it was never either/or. You can hold a firm limit AND stay curious about who your child is becoming. Our parents often parented from survival. That was love in the language they had. You get to keep the love and add something new: a kid who follows your lead because they trust you, not because they fear you.

Not control. Connection with a backbone.

Seventeen years married, three kids, and still unlearning “because I said so” in real time. This was never about being a perfect parent...just a present one, on purpose. 💛

I wonder if being a friend to your child feels like a threat to the power dynamic? And if so, who’s telling you that?

I wonder if being in a friendship with your child can deepen the relationship between the two of you that also shifts the way you interact with each other as parent and child.

I grew up with my parents saying that “I’m not their little friend” but I’m wondering why do those roles need to be exclusive? Can you be a parent and a friend? Who told us that we couldn’t? Are you afraid that each role carries a different level of respect?

We have to be intentional about the unchecked beliefs and rules we live by to prevent discourse in your relationships because of standards that have been placed on you.

This week has been so heavy for the black community with so many young lives lost. It has caused me to have a grateful heart as I pay all of this money to see my son play a sport he loves. He is safe. He feels supported. He is living his dream. And my heart couldn’t be any more full.

Parents - today is the day we choose joy. No matter your situation. You are doing the best you can and that is good enough.

We have to celebrate every win because secure parenting takes intentionality and breaking inherited patterns takes time and effort.

Because my first reflex wasn’t about them. It was me comparing my experience with their when the environment and time are completely different!

But I caught it. And I asked what they needed instead of repeating what I got.

Nobody throws a party for this one. So I’m throwing my own. 🤎

If you’re breaking a cycle no one can see you breaking, that’s the work. And you don’t have to do it alone. Book a discovery call, link in bio.

The rulebook we’re given is extremely lengthy. AND unlearning is the journey.

If your childhood was as all about being the “good girl” by being helpful, agreeable, and never too much. This process can feel unsettling. That’s okay.

The first step in healing is to RECOGNIZE the rule to decide if you want to continue living by it. That means you are living with intention not inheritance.

If you’re ready for real support with this, checkout my bio.

Hey mama — you got cast as “the reason.” That doesn’t mean you have to believe it.

They’re allowed to feel how they feel. It’s still not an instruction for how you see yourself.

You’re with you 24/7 so don’t hand that power to someone who already made up their mind. 🙌🏾

Somewhere along the way, you were handed a list of rules for being a “good woman” and every time you fall short, you don’t feel human, you feel like a failure.

That’s not the truth about you. That’s a thinking trap.

All-or-nothing thinking convinces you you’re too needy, that you have to do it all alone, that you can’t trust yourself. But those rules were interpreted for you. You’re allowed to question the interpretation. You’re allowed to choose differently.

You don’t have to keep measuring yourself against a standard that was never built for a real, feeling woman. 🤍
