Back-to-school season looks like a checklist: supplies, schedules, forms, backpacks. But underneath the checklist is a whole invisible one — the one nobody sees.
It’s remembering which kid needs new shoes and which one still fits into last year’s. It’s tracking every teacher’s name, every early-release day, every permission slip due “Friday” that you found out about Wednesday night. It’s holding the schedule for everyone in the house while still trying to keep your own life running.
That’s the mental load. It’s not the tasks themselves, but the constant background hum of remembering, anticipating, and managing so nothing falls through the cracks. It’s invisible, it’s exhausting, and it rarely gets acknowledged as real work.
If this season has you feeling more drained than the calendar seems to explain, you’re not imagining it and you’re not alone.
