After performing more than 1,000 robotic cardiac procedures, one lesson continues to shape how I think about surgery: Technical success is only part of the equation.
A successful operation is not defined solely by what happens in the operating room. It is measured by how well a patient recovers, returns home, regains independence, and gets back to the people and activities they love. That perspective influences every step of the process, from patient selection and surgical planning to postoperative care and recovery.
Innovation matters because it helps us improve the patient experience while maintaining exceptional outcomes. The goal is not simply to perform a complex procedure. The goal is to help patients move forward with their lives. At the end of the day, the best surgery is the one the patient recovers from well.
