Hey Girl 👋🏽 ✨ Did you know your baby’s position in the womb can impact how labor progresses?
Think of your pelvis as a curved tunnel. Your baby has to rotate and navigate through that tunnel using a series of movements called the cardinal movements of labor, which I call the baby dance 🤭 When baby starts labor in an optimal position, these movements are usually easier and more efficient.
Ideally, baby would be head down with the back of their head facing the front of your pelvis (ROA). In this position, it’s often easier for baby to rotate through the cardinal movements of labor and move down the birth canal.
When baby’s face is looking towards your belly (ROP) or often called sunny-side up, they may have a harder time rotating.
This can lead to
- more intense back labor,
-longer or stalled labor,
- increased maternal exhaustion while you’re laboring
While many posterior or sunny side up babies can still rotate and are born vaginally, encouraging movements to help get your baby into optimal positioning during pregnancy may help support a smoother labor.
This is why we practice movements that create space in the pelvis and encourage baby into an optimal position before labor begins.
You can start today by walking, hands-and-knees positions, pelvic tilts, utilizing your birth ball, and hip opening and mobility exercises! 😉
I highly recommend you check out the 10 daily movements from spinning babies to help out 💕
