I’ve been a little quieter on Substack lately while finishing and submitting my book proposal, but this week I finally had the chance to sit down and write a new Mental Vitamins piece.

It started with a question from an octopus in Remarkably Bright Creatures:

“What’s the point if you stop the business of living?”

And somehow led me to thinking about connection, disconnection, burning valleys, humanity, and why we seem to forget that we belong to each other.

A little reflection on two movies, the state of the world, and what might sit at the root of more suffering than we realize.

I recently watched Trevor Noah’s Joy in the Trenches on Netflix and I keep thinking about this…

Even in the trenches, literally, people found ways to laugh, connect, and be human.

It made me think about how often we feel like we have to choose one feeling. Like if things are hard, we’re not allowed to feel joy. Or if we find joy, it must mean things aren’t that bad.

But two things can be true at the same time.

You can be overwhelmed and still find moments of light.
You can be hurting and still feel connection.

And honestly, I think that ability—to hold both—is one of the closest things we have to peace.

Hi everyone,
Know a Texas LPC who would be an amazing supervisor, but hasn’t taken the next step due to cost?

One of the gaps I see in our field isn’t just training—it’s access to training. We need more supervisors. We need good supervisors. And we need pathways that make that possible.

For my upcoming Texas LPC 40-Hour Supervisor Training (April 24–25), I’m offering a limited number of pay-what-you-can spots for clinicians who haven’t been able to move forward due to financial barriers.

Supervision doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

The ethical questions we navigate as supervisors today are deeply shaped by the social, cultural, and political realities our clients and clinicians are living in. Issues related to identity, access to care, documentation, systemic barriers, and professional ethics are showing up in supervision conversations every day.

That’s why I created this training:

Culturally Responsive Supervision: Ethics, Relational Cultural Theory, and Social Justice

This course is designed for Texas LPC Supervisors who need the 6 hours of supervision CE required for supervisor renewal every two years, while also creating space to think more deeply about the ethical and relational responsibilities of supervision in today’s world.

In this training, we explore:

• Ethical decision-making in complex supervision scenarios
• Recent Texas LPC rule updates and documentation considerations
• Navigating power, privilege, and systemic influences in supervision
• Applying Relational Cultural Theory (RCT) to supervision practice
• Practical tools for culturally responsive supervision conversations

While I strongly encourage attending live for the interactive discussions, a recording will be available. If you cannot attend live, additional reflection assignments will be provided to ensure participants complete the full 6-hour CE requirement.
