"Isn't everyone already aware of autism?"

Aware that it exists? Maybe.

But true awareness means understanding things like:

→ 1 in 36 children is diagnosed with autism (CDC, 2023)
→ The average age of diagnosis is still 4-5 years old — despite signs being present much earlier
→ Black and Hispanic children are diagnosed later and less often, not because autism is less common, but because of systemic barriers to evaluation
→ Many families wait 12+ months for an evaluation appointment
→ Insurance coverage for ABA therapy varies wildly by state and plan
→ There are still communities where autism is stigmatized and misunderstood

Awareness isn't just about wearing blue or sharing a puzzle piece.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR CHILD WITH AUTISM FOR A DOCTOR'S VISIT 🏥

Doctor visits can be overwhelming for any kid. For children with autism, the unpredictability, sensory input, and long waits can make it especially challenging.

Here's how to set your child up for success:

BEFORE THE VISIT:
📖 Read a social story about going to the doctor (we can help you make one!)
📸 Show pictures of the office, the waiting room, and the doctor if possible
🗓️ Use a visual schedule: First car, then waiting room, then doctor, then done
💬 Practice — use a toy doctor kit to role-play what will happen

DAY OF:
🎧 Bring noise-canceling headphones
📱 Bring a preferred item or activity for the waiting room
⏰ Request the first appointment of the day (less waiting = less stress)
🗣️ Tell the front desk your child has autism — most offices will accommodate
👟 Let your child wear comfortable clothes (skip the jeans if sensory is an issue)

DURING THE VISIT:
✅ Ask the doctor to explain each step before doing it
