In health care, we often view the surgeon as the hero. After a traumatic injury, they're saving your life, they're stopping your pain, they're making you mobile again.

But to the orthopaedic surgeon, the patient is the hero.

For Christina Brady, MD, one patient changed the trajectory of her practice. That patient led her to take on even more difficult cases and change even more lives.

"It's amazing how one patient can completely change the trajectory of your life as a surgeon." — Christina Brady, MD

The Texas Orthopaedic Association is already looking ahead to our 2027 Annual Conference this April in Dallas.

This year's program features parallel tracks: one room dedicated to clinical topics and the other focused on business and public policy.

TOA's Annual Conference is the only conference focused exclusively on orthopaedics in Texas, designed for orthopaedic surgeons and practice administrators alike.

A special thank you to TMLT for once again serving as TOA's title sponsor. We're grateful for their continued partnership and support of orthopaedics in Texas.

Consolidation is plaguing our nation's health care system, and the drastic surgeon cuts proposed by Medicare will only accelerate it.

Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne understands what's at stake.

She sat down with Texas orthopaedic surgeons and AAOS Advocacy earlier today to hear firsthand how these cuts would affect patients and practices across our state.

CMS is proposing dramatic Medicare cuts that threaten to accelerate consolidation and limit patient access to orthopaedic care.

Today, more than a dozen Texas orthopaedic surgeons are on Capitol Hill with AAOS to show Congress how Medicare policy is driving consolidation and what it means for patients.

You can make your voice heard too. Learn how surgeons and patients can engage Congress from right here in Texas:

Ask a hand surgeon what they treat and the list keeps going: reconstruction, arthritis, pediatric conditions, nerve injuries, vascular repair, trauma. At TOA's Annual Conference, Jason Coffman, MD, Joanne Zhou, MD, and Brian Sager, MD, broke it down.

Whether it's a professional athlete or someone who frames houses for a living, the hands are how the work happens — and how so much of life happens. Orthopaedic hand surgeons help everyone return to work and return to the things they love to do.

Imagine how much you use your hands every single day. Now meet the orthopaedic hand surgeons who are helping countless Texans return to work and return to the things they love to do with their hands.

"They Don't Know How to Quit"

Orthopaedic surgeons care for one of the widest patient ranges in all of medicine — from newborns to patients in the final stages of life. For Surya Mundluru, MD, that population is children.

In this video, Dr. Mundluru shares why he chose pediatric orthopaedic care and what it's like to spend his days helping kids get back to doing what they do best: being kids.

"The beauty of children is that all they want to do is play and be children. Sometimes life gets in the way, but we can help them through that process and get them to be who they are: which is enjoyers of life.

"Children are absolutely amazing. They don't know how to quit. Even when you think that things are dire, and even when you are trying to be realistic sometimes about outcomes, they take that outcome that you thought that they would hopefully get to and then trounce it. It's part of the reason why I decided to go into pediatric care is because of the fact that I get inspired and re-energized by my patients every single day."

Dr. Mundluru is one of dozens of orthopaedic surgeons across Texas who dedicate their careers to the pediatric population. This is what the world of a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon looks like.

The foot and ankle are among the most complex structures in the human body — and they hold up everything above them.

That's why the highest-trained clinician, the orthopaedic surgeon, is best prepared to care for the foot and ankle.

Drs. Christian Royer, Taggart Gauvain and William McGarvey break down what makes the foot and ankle so intricate — and the remarkable evolution of care that's driving better outcomes for patients today.
