🚨 Sciatica? Don't Forget the Other Side.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is focusing only on the side that hurts.

Now don't get me wrongβ€”the painful side absolutely deserves attention. But if we ignore the compensation patterns the body develops, we may miss part of the picture.

The body is incredibly good at adapting. When one side becomes painful, the other side often starts working harder, tightening up, or changing the way you move.

That's why my clinical approach includes:
βœ… Addressing the painful side
βœ… Assessing compensation patterns
βœ… Looking at the body as a whole

Pain is important. Compensation is important too.

Have you ever noticed one side of your body feeling tighter or working harder than the other?

πŸ”₯ My Top 4 Stretches for Hip & Back Pain πŸ”₯

Many people focus only on where the pain is felt.

But tight hips, restricted mobility, and poor movement patterns can contribute to low back discomfort and stiffness.

In this video, I demonstrate 4 of my favorite partner-assisted stretches and mobility drills that may help improve movement, reduce tension, and get your body moving better.

βœ… Improve hip mobility
βœ… Open tight hip flexors
βœ… Improve rotation
βœ… Support better movement patterns

Which stretch looked like it would help you the most?

πŸ›‘ Your Body May Need Stability, Not Another Stretch

One of the biggest mistakes I see is assuming every tight muscle needs more stretching.

Sometimes the body creates tension for a reason.

The nervous system may increase muscle activity to protect an area that feels vulnerable, irritated, or unstable. In those situations, constantly stretching the area may provide temporary relief but fail to address the underlying issue.

This is one reason why some people stretch every day and still feel tight.

For many cases of sciatica, low back pain, and chronic tension, improving stability, movement quality, and confidence can be just as important as improving flexibility.

Have you ever stretched an area repeatedly only to have the tightness return?

Facet Joint Irritation: What Massage Therapists Should Know

Facet joint irritation can contribute to localized spinal pain, stiffness, and discomfort during certain movements. While massage therapy cannot reposition or "fix" a facet joint, it may help reduce muscle guarding, improve comfort, and support healthy movement patterns.
βœ… Focus on symptom relief
βœ… Address compensation patterns
βœ… Support mobility and function
βœ… Refer when red flags are present
Understanding spinal mechanics can help therapists make better clinical decisions and improve treatment outcomes.

πŸ”₯ The Stretch Your Back Has Been Asking For

Does your back feel stiff no matter how much you stretch?

Sometimes the issue isn't a lack of stretchingβ€”it's a lack of movement. This mobility exercise helps improve thoracic rotation, reduce tension through the back, lengthen tight lats, and encourage deeper breathing.

I often find that when the mid-back becomes stiff, other areas like the neck, shoulders, and low back start working overtime.

This movement may be especially helpful for:
βœ… Desk workers
βœ… Swimmers
βœ… Athletes
βœ… Anyone feeling stiff and restricted

Remember to take slow, deep breaths while holding the stretch and move within your comfort level.

Have you ever noticed your back feeling tighter on one side than the other?

🚨 Low Back Pain? The Problem Might Not Be Your Back.

One of the most overlooked contributors to low back discomfort is tight hip flexors.

When we spend hours sitting, the hip flexors can become shortened and restricted, affecting how the pelvis and lower back move. Over time, this may contribute to stiffness, discomfort, and altered movement patterns.

In this video, I demonstrate a contract-relax stretching technique that may help improve hip flexor mobility and reduce tension around the hips and lower back.

Have you ever noticed your back feels worse after sitting for long periods? Let me know in the comments.

Pain is a real pain, and it's not just about the ouch factor. It also affects how we breathe, which is just great. When discomfort develops, people commonly: βœ… Take shallower breaths, because who needs oxygen anyway? βœ… Move their rib cage less, flexibility is so last season. βœ… Rely more on their neck and shoulder muscles to breathe, because that's not going to cause any tension. Over time, muscles like the scalenes, upper trapezius, and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) can become overworked, potentially contributing to neck tension, shoulder tightness, headaches, and ongoing discomfort. As massage therapists, improving breathing mechanics is often an overlooked piece of the puzzle. Sometimes helping a client move, breathe, and relax better can be just as important as addressing the painful area itself. Massage Therapists: How often do you assess breathing patterns during your sessions? Clients: Have you ever noticed yourself breathing more shallowly when you're in pain or stressed?

One of my biggest pet peeves as a massage therapist is seeing therapists criticized for continuing to learn.

Let's be clear:

Diagnosing conditions is outside our scope.
Prescribing medical treatment is outside our scope.

But learning anatomy?
Learning biomechanics?
Understanding movement patterns, compensation strategies, and pain science?

That's called professional growth.

The massage therapy profession continues to evolve. The therapists who invest in education can better communicate with clients, collaborate with other healthcare professionals, and provide higher-quality care while remaining within their scope of practice.

Stay ethical.
Stay professional.
Stay within your scope.

But don't let anyone convince you that learning more about the human body is a bad thing.

What are your thoughts?

Do you think massage therapists are sometimes discouraged from expanding their knowledge?

🦷 Taking care of your mouth is just as important as taking care of the rest of your body.

As a massage therapist, I spend a lot of time talking about muscles, posture, and overall wellnessβ€”but oral health is part of self-care too. Healthy gums and teeth can have a big impact on your overall health and confidence.

I've been using this water flosser and really like how easy it is to add to my daily routine. It's a simple way to help keep your mouth feeling fresh and clean, especially if traditional flossing isn't your favorite.
