For many Black adults, the journey to a late autism diagnosis is due to many systemic reasons. For decades, autism research centered the presentation of symptoms among white males, leaving Black children and adults unseen, mislabeled, or completely overlooked. What was called “behavior issues,” “attitude,” or even misdiagnosed as anxiety, depression, or Bipolar Disorder in Black individuals, was often autism that was never properly diagnosed.
We deserve research that sees us, we need more diversity among clinicians who understand us, and spaces where our experiences are validated.
If this resonates with you, you’re not alone. And it’s not too late for clarity, support, and self-understanding. Let’s keep the conversation going.
