MYTH: “Bedwetting is caused by trauma.”

While stress can sometimes contribute to changes in bladder habits, most bedwetting is NOT caused by trauma.

Many children who wet the bed have underlying physical contributors such as:
• Constipation
• Family history
• Bladder dysfunction
• Pelvic floor coordination issues
• Mouth breathing or airway concerns

Bedwetting is common, treatable, and not your child’s fault.

At Fundamental Physical Therapy, pediatric pelvic floor therapy focuses on helping children improve bowel and bladder habits, body awareness, and confidence. Let us help you get to dry nights!!

International Bedwetting Awareness Day is this week, and we are striving to bust some long-standing myths about bedwetting and the search for nighttime dryness.

MYTH: “They just sleep too deeply.”

Deep sleep alone usually isn’t the whole story.

Children who wet the bed may also struggle with:
• Constipation
• Mouth breathing
• Snoring
• Restless sleep
• Bladder signaling difficulties
• Pelvic floor dysfunction

Research continues to show connections between sleep-disordered breathing and bedwetting in children.

If your child snores, mouth breathes, or wets the bed regularly, it may be worth looking deeper.

Helping kids starts with understanding the whole body connection.

MYTH: “Bedwetting is behavioral.”

Kids are not choosing to wet the bed.

Bedwetting is NOT laziness, manipulation, or bad behavior. In many cases, it is linked to:
• Constipation
• Bladder dysfunction
• Nervous system regulation
• Genetics
• Sleep-disordered breathing
• Pelvic floor coordination challenges

Punishment and shame do not help — support and understanding do.

When we understand the WHY behind bedwetting, we can better help children feel confident and successful.

New mom? We see you — and we’ve got your back (and your pelvic floor)! After childbirth it’s normal to have temporary pelvic pain, bladder leaks, or worry about prolapse. But it should not linger for more than a few weeks.
Hi! I'm Darlene, a licensed pelvic health physical therapist in Lake Norman, and I help moms in Huntersville, NC regain strength, confidence, and safe return to everyday life.

Here’s one gentle tip to start: practice slow, gentle core re-engagement — lie on your back with knees bent, breathe, then gently draw your belly button toward your spine as you exhale. Hold for 3–5 seconds and repeat 6–8 times, once or twice daily. Easy wins add up!

Want support tailored to your body and goals? Visit https://wix.to/0hi1FQ4 to learn more or book an appointment. You don’t have to do this alone. 💙🤱

World Bedwetting Awareness Day is May 26th!!!

MYTH: “They’ll all grow out of it.”

While some kids naturally outgrow bedwetting, many continue struggling for years without support. Persistent bedwetting can be connected to constipation, bladder habits, sleep quality, pelvic floor coordination, or airway issues.

Waiting it out may also impact confidence, sleepovers, camps, and emotional wellbeing.

Bedwetting is common — but that doesn’t mean families have to just “wait and see.”

Pediatric pelvic floor physical therapy can help address the root causes and support healthy bowel and bladder habits.

For many families, bedwetting affects sleep, confidence, social activities, and emotional well-being. Kids may avoid sleepovers, camps, or overnight trips because they are embarrassed. Parents may feel frustrated or unsure where to turn for answers. The good news: bedwetting in kids is treatable and...

I had the opportunity to cheer on one of my “clinic kids” this weekend as he participated in the Wings of Eagles Horse Show. It was great to see how far he has come and to be part of the amazing work that is happening at Wings of Eagles Ranch. It is a beautiful property that is being used to serve and care for so many in the special needs community. A place full of peace and purpose!!
