⭐ Meet Dawn!

Dawn has been a steady and reliable presence at our front desk for over 8 years. As the “keeper of the gate,” she keeps the office organized, ensures things run efficiently, and helps maintain clear structure for both patients and providers. Her consistency and attention to detail help keep everything on track behind the scenes.

🌀 What do you enjoy most about working at Excel Psychiatric Associates?
Being able to go to a place every day to work with people that actually care about the people they see, and then hearing how those people say how much they feel our practice helped them. Actually, I love just being there and knowing how much working here saved me, too.

🌀 What do you like to do to relax?
Relaxing is not really something I do well! I guess driving alone and turning my radio way up to mask my singing along badly, reading about American history, and time spent with my amazing grandchildren!

🌀 What is your guilty pleasure song?
I have a few, but probably Paradise City, by Guns N’ Roses right now, but not entirely sure it’s a guilty pleasure, or just guilt from my attempting to ban the group at our home because of their name without actually listening to their music.

🌀 What does your dream vacation look like?
My dream vacation would be going anywhere that I could see where the history of the United States was made. Walking tours of areas in and around Boston fulfilled one of my dream locations, hoping one day to get to Philadelphia to do the same there.

Not every child who struggles to attend school is refusing to learn.

Some children are fighting battles that cannot be seen - sensory overload, anxiety, exhaustion, uncertainty, overwhelm, and the constant effort of trying to cope in environments that were not designed with them in mind.

When we see school attendance only through the lens of behaviour, motivation, or compliance, we risk missing the real reasons a child is struggling.

The goal is the same for every child - to learn, belong, and thrive. But not every child can take the same path to get there.

A little more understanding can change everything.

Need a little boost? ☀️

Dopamine is often called the brain’s “feel-good” chemical, and some of the best ways to support it are surprisingly simple: a walk outside, listening to your favorite song, crossing something off your to-do list, laughing with a friend, or trying something new.

What’s interesting is that the most sustainable dopamine hits usually don’t come from scrolling or instant gratification. They tend to come from connection, movement, novelty, accomplishment, and meaning.

Which one on this list works best for you?

😩 You’ve tried this medication and that medication and none of them have seemed to help!

🧬 Trial and error isn’t always the most effective way to figure out what medication each person should be taking. At Excel Psychiatric Associates, we can reduce that trial and error time with genetic testing!

👃 With a simple cheek swab, we can assess how differences in your genes affect how your body breaks down different psychiatric medications. This can help identify if certain medications may have a higher-than-average risk of side effects at usual doses, or if you might need a higher-than-average dose.

💊 For example, if your metabolism operates rapidly, you might need a higher dose of a medication because your body burns through it quicker. For those with a slower metabolism, you might need a lower dose because the medication will stay in your system longer.

⭐ Each person is unique, and genetic testing can help us avoid a major trial and error period. If you’d like to learn more about genetic testing, reach out to us today!

One thing our clients continually teach us is that people are often far more resilient than they realize.

As clinicians, we help clients recognize the strengths, growth, and progress they may not be able to see in themselves. In return, our clients remind us every day that healing is rarely loud or linear.

The person who feels “broken” may actually be demonstrating incredible resilience. The person who seems fine on the outside may be navigating anxiety, grief, burnout, or depression behind the scenes.

Real growth doesn’t come from being perfect. It comes from having the support, safety, and space to be human.

⭐ Meet Avery!

Avery is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner who supports the practice on a part-time basis, helping to fill scheduling gaps and expand access to care. She brings a warm, approachable presence and is committed to creating a comfortable, supportive experience for patients. Her flexibility allows us to offer additional appointment availability while continuing to meet patients where they are.

🌀 Tell us your specialties:
I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who is passionate about helping individuals improve their mental health and overall quality of life. I have worked in the mental health field for over four years, gaining valuable experience caring for patients across a variety of mental health settings. I bring a strong clinical foundation and a genuine commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care. My primary areas of interest include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

🌀 Why did you go into your field?
I chose this field because I believe mental health care should be accessible, supportive, and free of stigma. My goal is to help expand mental health services while creating a safe environment where patients feel heard, respected, and empowered throughout their treatment journey.

🌀 What do you enjoy most about your career?
What I enjoy most about my career is helping people rediscover joy in life and develop healthier lifestyles that support both their mental and physical well-being. Seeing patients regain confidence, stability, and hope is incredibly rewarding.

🌀 What do you do to relax?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors boating, fishing, hiking, and traveling with my family. Music is also a big part of my life.

🌀 What is your guilty pleasure song?
Anything by Dolly Parton

🌀 What does your dream vacation look like?
My dream vacation would be relaxing on a tropical island with my family, enjoying the ocean, good food, and quality time together.

Not every win looks impressive from the outside.

Sometimes it’s getting out of bed when everything feels heavy.

Sometimes it’s drinking a glass of water instead of running on caffeine and stress.

Sometimes it’s taking a break without feeling like you have to earn it first.

Sometimes it’s answering the text, taking the walk, making the appointment, or simply making it through the day.

These moments may seem small, but they’re not insignificant.

Progress isn’t measured only by major milestones. It’s also found in the quiet acts of caring for yourself when it’s hard.

If you’ve done any of these things lately, give yourself credit. Small steps are still steps, and they count more than you think.
