Have you ever known or heard that birth can look like this?
This is what can happen when women feel totally safe, valued, in a familiar environment and in control of their birth.

Don’t let Hollywood or pop culture fool you - many times, actually most of the time, they portray birth surrounded by panic, fear, emergent, and not something to slow down and respect at its own pace.

Women’s bodies are amazing. It’s time more women knew the truth about birth and what our bodies are made to do 💛

What was one fear or myth you had to dismantle surrounding birth and how did it change?

I couldn’t have said it better! 💛 Birth, and everything immediately after birth, is totally driven by hormones. The hormones run the show and effect everything;
How labor progresses (or stalls), how mama and baby bond, how baby begins to latch and establish breastfeeding…

Being able to smell your baby’s pheromones will release a cascade of oxytocin and various hormones to help the beginning domino effects of your colostrum and eventually milk output. The more oxytocin flows, the more your uterus also continues to contract and facilitate in your body’s healing process.

When you smell and touch your newborn immediately after birth, sensory signals travel to your brain—particularly areas involved in maternal bonding and lactation.

Baby’s smell can stimulate oxytocin release ❤️

Newborn odor is a powerful maternal cue. Exposure to your baby’s smell, especially combined with skin-to-skin contact, can increase maternal oxytocin activity.

Oxytocin is important because it causes the milk-ejection (“let-down”) reflex. It also promotes bonding and helps the uterus contract after birth.
It’s not “bad” to put a hat on a baby per ce, but keeping baby warm while being able to smell that newborn smell has so many benefits of its own!

Birth Emergency Skills Training (BEST). A day filled with fellow birth workers and Midwives. Where we practice emergency birth scenarios in an out of hospital setting. This time shared is one of story telling and learning. Where discuss hard birth experiences so we all can learn from each other. This is Andrea Dixon’s last time teaching here as she retires in May. What a gift you have given to the home birth community. So thankful to have been able to practipate in what you created through the years. We love you Andrea.
