Arbor Rehabilitation recently asked our therapists: "What's Your Why" in becoming a therapist? This particular response embodies what so many of us experience when working in long term care. Thank you Beth for your compassion and dedication!
Once upon a time there was a woman named Beth who dreamed of being a speech therapist. She had a lot of expectations concerning her job and the top one was that she would NEVER work in a nursing home. Unfortunately, when the time came to look for a job, there were not as many options as Beth hoped. In fact, it was either a hospital position (with lower end pay) or decent pay at a SNF. Beth wanted the hospital. Her husband wanted the higher pay. So, to make her husband happy, at least as a trial , it was off to the nursing home Beth went.

This story has a great ending though, because it turned out that Beth loved the people she worked with in the nursing home! They had incredible stories to share and were so inspiring as they fought through the challenges they faced to get back to their previous function. Beth noted that the feeling that you get when you watch someone who has been on a pureed diet for a few weeks finally enjoy that meal they have been dreaming of…or when someone is able to communicate with their loved one after weeks of struggle…or when they get so excited that they completed that memory task without any help…nothing beats that feeling. Turns out Beth was made for working in nursing homes and really can’t imagine being anywhere else.

Beth's passion and enthusiasm for working with her patients is an all-around gift and win-win situation! Thank you Beth for sharing your talents with your patients and Arbor Rehabilitation!

The therapy team at White Oak had a wonderful surprise visit! ❤️

A former rehab patient, Allen, recently stopped by White Oak after a short stay of therapy following frequent falls, heart failure, and a reduced ejection fraction. To make things even more challenging, his previous knee surgery had not been successful. At the time, Allen was unable to climb steps, relied on a walker, and needed assistance with many daily activities.

This time, Allen came back with a message of absolute gratitude: **he is now independent in his apartment!** 🎉

He no longer needs a walker, is back to going to the gym, and is actively volunteering in his community. What an incredible transformation!

Facility Rehab Coordinator Bethany shared that Allen's visit was truly heartwarming. White Oak primarily serves long-term care residents, so having a former patient return simply to say thank you—and share a few hugs, smiles, and his success story—was especially meaningful.

After a week of reflecting on our “Why” for becoming therapists, Bethany said it perfectly:

**“It’s those things that make this job worth doing.”**

We couldn’t agree more, Bethany! Thank you for supporting such meaningful journeys and celebrating these happy endings with us. 💙

As part of Rehab Week celebrations, we asked Arbor Rehab therapists for their "Why" on becoming a therapist or therapist assistant and working in a SNF. Here's what they told us!
“My kids are expensive and made me.”

“I am slightly off mentally." :) However... “I try hard here because these people are like family. They literally have no one.”

“Because I love the feeling of Friends, Grandparents and Parents always being around me, teaching me to be a better person every day and building a relationship in a setting where the people are my extended family and I get to be with them almost every day.”

“I fell in love with the setting during my first clinical! It's the most rewarding feeling helping to improve independence in this population and getting patient's back home to their loved ones (most of the time lol).”

“So I could spend weeks/months helping patients, building relationships and seeing lasting outcomes”

“I became a therapist in a SNF because older folks are funny"

“Career change at 40”

“To make a difference and I love to listen to their life stories!”

“Cause I love working with my old people and love communication and memory”

"I started at outpatient and received a cold call job offer with a big salary increase is how I started in skilled nursing $$ LOL. I love Skilled nursing and what I do now!"

Cindy Hudson, Dir of Clinical Compliance : I became an OT because I saw that even if I couldn’t help a person physically regain all of their skills, I could emotionally support them with coaching, adaptations and accommodations to help them live their best lives. Integrating the body and mind with the rehab process also was and definitely still is amazing to me! Then I realized much of what we can / cannot do is based on insurance and liability. That led me to question “what is the work-around so we can provide the best care possible” within these constraints. So compliance and quality assurance are a natural fit for me. I get super excited about the opportunity to share new information with teams and help our therapists help our residents in the best way possible. I love working with an organization that shares my vision for clinical excellence!

Rose Vargo, Director of Clinical Operations: My “why” is simple: To help others feel valued and important. Period. I became an SLP because I knew there were people out there (old and young) who had a lot to say, but couldn’t for a variety of reasons. I wanted to help them feel HEARD and valued. After a few years in the field, I was hearing similar feelings amongst my coworkers-they didn’t feel valued or important anymore. For me, this was the same calling, just a different process. I pursued management and operations because I saw incredibly dedicated people giving so much of themselves to help others. I wanted to be in a position where I could help those people succeed-removing barriers, creating opportunities, and showing consistent appreciation for doing what they do best: making a difference in the lives of others.

At Arbor Rehab, treating everyone as if they are our own family is not just a slogan, it's our everyday culture!

Bethany is the perfect example of what it means to lead with both excellence and heart. She is incredibly organized, deeply committed to her patients and her team, and always willing to step in with help, insight, or encouragement wherever it's needed.

What makes Bethany especially deserving of this recognition is the culture she has built. She has created an environment where her staff and residents feel supported and valued. That doesn't happen by accident-it takes the level of creativity, compassion-and humor- that Bethany displays on a daily basis.

Bethany, thank you for everything you do for your patients, your team, and your building. Your leadership makes a difference, and we are so fortunate to have you on our team.

Arbor Rehab is proud to recognize SHELDON FORD as our very first Employee of the Month!

Sheldon is a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) at our Springfield, Ohio facility, Springfield Masonic Community. This expansive campus provides a full continuum of care, from independent living apartments to memory care and everything in between. No matter where Sheldon is working, he is always known for his positive attitude and welcoming smile.

The facility's Assistant Director of Nursing recently shared a heartfelt letter recognizing the impact Sheldon has on the residents. She praised his outstanding work and noted that the residents simply "love him!" One resident even shared, "I love working with Sheldon. He makes me smile every time!"

Sheldon, along with his brother Turner—who is also a PTA at Springfield—brings energy, humor, compassion, and exceptional clinical skills to the therapy department each day. Together, they create a positive environment for both residents and colleagues.

Thank you, Sheldon, for embodying Arbor's mission to treat every patient as if they were our own mother or father. Your dedication, kindness, and commitment to providing exceptional care make you truly deserving of this recognition. Congratulations on being our first Employee of the Month!

This Fourth of July, we're proud to celebrate not only our nation's Independence Day, but also America's 250th anniversary—a historic milestone that honors our past, and the brave men and women who built this country, while inspiring us to build an even brighter future.

Hat's off to the PT Department at White Oak! They enabled a man to get out of bed with a "portable" oxygen tank and walk down to the vending machine for his favorite and long-lost treat, a Honey Bun! The the PT fashioned an basket as well to hold his snacks. His smile says it all, thank you Bethany and Jess!

Arbor Rehabilitation's Director of Clinical Compliance, Cindy Hudson, OTR/L, CHC, RAC-CT, was honored to be a presenter at this year's Ohio Health Care Convention held in Columbus, Ohio. Her brief but informative session included a fun take-away puzzle to highlight important tips. Arbor also was busy manning a booth at the convention to greet friends and acquaintances alike!
