One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that the robot performs the surgery on its own. It doesn’t. Every movement is still controlled by me. Robotic technology doesn’t replace the surgeon, it gives me better tools. It provides greater precision, more control, better visualization, and wristed instruments that move more naturally than traditional surgical instruments.

For bariatric surgery, that level of precision matters. My goal is always to perform your procedure as safely and effectively as possible, and robotic technology helps me do exactly that.

When I was growing up, there were even fewer Black physicians than there are today.

Becoming a surgeon was never just about my career. It was about showing the next generation that this path is possible. That you belong here. That your background should never limit your future.

Representation in medicine matters because trust matters. When patients see a physician who understands their experiences, culture, and community, it helps build the foundation for better care.

I’m proud to be part of that change, and I hope to inspire the next generation to keep pushing forward.

To every student, young professional, and person chasing a goal: You do belong here.

Your journey may not look like everyone else’s. It may be harder. It may come with more obstacles, more setbacks, and more moments where you question yourself. But those challenges are not weaknesses—they are often the very things that build resilience, character, and success.

Mistakes are part of growth. Falling is normal. Staying down is not.

Don’t let fear, self-doubt, or imposter syndrome stop you from pursuing opportunities. You are more capable than you think, and growth only happens when we challenge ourselves beyond our comfort zones.

Take the shot. Take the chance. Take the path less traveled. Because sometimes, that’s the path that makes all the difference.

I belong here. You belong here. We belong here.

In many families, we talk about everything except our health.

But avoiding conversations about weight, diabetes, and high blood pressure doesn’t make the risks disappear. Obesity is a chronic disease that can impact nearly every part of the body, from your heart and kidneys to your joints, lungs, and overall quality of life.

The good news? You have options. Education is the first step toward making informed decisions about your health and your future.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work extends beyond the operating room.

As Chair of the Health Equity Committee for ASMBS, I’m proud to help lead the Pathways Program alongside Dr. Crystal Johnson-Mann. This initiative brings underrepresented students to our annual conference to learn about the obesity epidemic, obesity treatment, and the many opportunities available in healthcare and the health sciences.

Representation matters. When students see people who look like them succeeding in medicine and surgery, it helps them realize that those same opportunities are possible for them too.

I’m incredibly grateful to Dr. Johnson-Mann, ASMBS, the TRIO Foundation, and everyone who continues to support this program and invest in the next generation of healthcare leaders.

Some of the most rewarding moments in medicine don’t happen in the operating room, they happen during follow-up visits.

Recently, a patient told me she felt so cared for during her hospital stay that it reminded her of being surrounded by family. Hearing that not only meant a lot to me, but it was also a testament to the incredible nurses and healthcare professionals who show up every day to serve others.

Helping patients through some of the most challenging moments of their lives is a privilege I’ll never take for granted.

This is why I do what I do.

The future of healthcare starts with exposure, opportunity, and representation.
At the third annual Pathway Program in San Antonio, students from underrepresented communities were given a firsthand look into the world of STEM, bariatrics, obesity treatment, healthcare innovation, marketing, finance, and beyond. Hosted during the ASMBS Annual Meeting and supported by the TRIO Foundation, this program is helping students see what’s possible by connecting them with real healthcare leaders, hands-on experiences, mentorship opportunities, and cutting-edge technology shaping the future of patient care.

Because sometimes all it takes is seeing someone who looks like you doing it… to realize you can too.

People see the white coat. They don’t always see the sacrifice behind it. More than a decade of training. Long nights. Missed holidays. Constant pressure. And for many Black physicians, the experience of often being one of the few in the room.

Finding the right obesity provider can change everything.
I had the opportunity to join The BariNation Podcast for a conversation about obesity care, advocacy, and how patients can find a doctor who truly listens, educates, and supports them through every step of their journey.
What started as a conversation over a pair of Nike Air Maxes turned into an important discussion about why compassionate, holistic obesity care matters so much.
We also put together a guide to help people know what to look for when choosing a provider because no one should have to navigate this journey alone.

Weight is not just about discipline. It’s biology. Bariatric surgery isn’t just about smaller portions, it changes hunger hormones, how your body regulates weight, and how you experience hunger.
For many patients, especially in our community, it quiets the constant fight that diets never fixed. That struggle is not a failure. It’s not weakness. It’s something real and it deserves real care. Surgery doesn’t replace effort. It finally allows your effort to work.
