Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Huntington is a specialty acute care hospital accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC). This hospital is designed as a bridge in the continuum of care and is intended to provide intensive, specialized care for medically complex patients that require a longer treatment and recovery period. Their goal is to treat the immediate and long-term needs of patients with the goal of helping each patient reach the next level of well-being on their path to a full recovery.

Weak and unable to walk, David was hospitalized for kidney failure that led to dialysis and ventilator dependence.

AT ADMISSION: David suffered from renal failure and immune-related kidney inflammation, requiring hemodialysis. He later required mechanical ventilation and a tracheostomy.

TREATMENT AT CORNERSTONE: Once transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Huntington, David received wound care, nursing, respiratory therapy, dietary support, physical therapy and occupational therapy. After dialysis, his kidney function recovered, and he was decannulated. He regained the endurance to walk long distances.

OUTCOME: After a 76-day stay, David was discharged and returned home, excited to return to his own house with his spouse and teenage child. “It has been a wonderful stay,” he said.

We would like to Congratulate Bobbie Nash, LPN, our March, Employee of the Month. Bobbie joined our team in September 2022. She has experience in Family Care, Nephrology & Hypertension. Bobbie is a mother to her 21 year old daughter, a widow, a Scentsy Consultant, and a nurse of 11 years. Bobbies favorite quote is "Your present circumstances do not determine where you can go, they merely determine where you start". She loves to spend time with her daughter, reading, traveling and attending concerts. Bobbie is a dedicated employee that continuously goes above and beyond in delivering high quality patient centered care. She sacrifices time from her own family by picking up numerous extra shifts. Barbara came to the ER with fatigue, abdominal pain, and poor nutritional intake. She was found to have an abdominal wall hernia bowel strangulation and suspected perforation. She underwent a major abdominal surgery to discover and treat her condition, resulting in the removal of part of the large intestine and part of the small intestine, and the reconnection of the healthy ends of the bowels.

She developed septic shock after her procedures and required mechanical ventilation and Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). She underwent tracheostomy procedures and was unable to wean from the ventilator. She was then transferred to Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Huntington.

During her time at Cornerstone, Barbara underwent treatment from the respiratory team. She was liberated from the ventilator, and she was able to tolerate a speaking valve to communicate. She completed her course of IV antibiotics to treat pneumonia. She received blood transfusions for anemia and had strict diabetes management. She was soon able to tolerate a diet by mouth and drink normal liquids. Furthermore, she participated in physical and occupational therapy and underwent diligent wound care treatments.

Barbara will soon be celebrating her 56th wedding anniversary. She and her husband have three adult sons and seven grandchildren. They are an extremely close-knit family that leans heavily on their faith.

She discharged to a skilled nursing facility for more rehabilitation in hopes of having her trach removed and getting stronger before going home.
