Investing in the future of surgical innovation! πŸ€–πŸ”¬

Our PGY-3 resident, Dr. Kelsie Roberts Moore, participated this weekend in the Colorectal Preceptorship in Robotic Surgery hosted by The Ohio State University Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery and Advanced Robotic Surgery.

During this intensive two-day course, Dr. Roberts Moore enhanced her robotic surgery skills through hands-on tissue and cadaver labs, as well as didactic sessions and video review focused on colorectal robotic techniques. Experiences like these provide invaluable opportunities for residents to advance their technical abilities while gaining exposure to evolving surgical technologies.

We are also grateful for opportunities to collaborate with colleagues who share a passion for surgical education, including PGY2, Dr. Ana Caudillo, from our sister Rural Surgery program.

We are so proud of these residents' commitment to continued learning and excellence as they expand their expertise in minimally invasive and robotic surgery.πŸ’šπŸŒŸπŸ©Ί

A special moment of recognition for a truly special educator! πŸŒŸπŸ’šπŸ©Ί

This morning, Dr. Bown presented Dr. Jamie Anderson with a commemorative plaque designating "The Anderson Surgical Simulation & Skills Suite" in honor of her extraordinary contributions as our 2025–2026 Surgical Skills & Simulation Chief.

Jamie has been a driving force behind the growth of our Surgical Simulation Lab and the development of resident simulation curriculum, creating meaningful opportunities for residents to learn, practice, and build confidence in a supportive educational environment. Her creativity, leadership, and unwavering commitment to surgical education have helped shape the training experience of countless residents.

While the plaque bears her name, the true recognition lies in the lasting impact she has had on the surgeons she has mentored and the educational foundation she has helped build for future generations.

Thank you, Dr. Anderson, for your dedication to our residents, your passion for teaching, and the legacy you continue to create within our program. We are grateful for all that you do! πŸ†

Good food, great company, and time together outside the hospital β˜€οΈπŸ³β˜•

Our residents recently enjoyed a brunch gathering hosted by Dr. Thompson, Chief of Trauma Services, as an opportunity to connect outside the clinical environment and celebrate the camaraderie that makes residency so special.

We are incredibly grateful for faculty who invest not only in our residents’ surgical education, but also in their well-being, mentorship, and sense of community.

And the fun may not be over yet… rumor has it Dr. Thompson is already planning a second annual resident movie theater outing later this summer! 🍿🎬

Thank you, Dr. Thompson, for your continued support of our residents! πŸŒŸπŸ’šπŸ©Ί

Today, we are proud to recognize and celebrate our International Medical Graduate residents in honor of IMG Well-Being Day. 🌎🩺

Many of our IMG trainees pursued surgical training far from home and away from familiar support systems, demonstrating remarkable perseverance, courage, adaptability, and dedication to the profession. Their diverse experiences and perspectives strengthen our residency program, enrich our learning environment, and enhance the care we provide to our patients each day.

Thank you, Drs. Plummer, Ratliff, Rahimpour, Balakrishnan, Meyer, Yokota, and Edah, for all that you bring to our surgical family.

Leadership. Growth. Teamwork. πŸ©ΊπŸ™οΈπŸ“š

Our rising Chief Residents recently attended the 2026 Leadership Skills Training for Chief Residents in Chicago, participating in a three-day program focused on developing the leadership skills essential for guiding surgical teams and residency programs.

Sessions included identifying personal leadership strengths and areas for growth, orientation to the unique roles and challenges of serving as Chief Resident, fostering well-being and belonging within residency programs, and navigating conflict and power dynamics within hierarchical organizations.

We are proud of their investment in leadership development and excited to watch them guide our program in the upcoming academic year. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Competition, camaraderie, and a little controlled chaos πŸŽΆβœ‚οΈπŸ…

As part of our continued efforts to foster resident engagement and a strong culture of learning within our program, we recently hosted the inaugural "The Cutting Edge: General Surgery Residency Olympics" prior to M&M Conference.

The opening event β€” the Resident vs. Attending Blindfolded Knot-Tying Challenge β€” featured walk-up music, good-natured competition, and plenty of laughter while highlighting the camaraderie that makes our program so special.

Congratulations to our resident champions, Drs. Yokota (15 ties) and Giangrosso (18 ties), and to our faculty champion, Dr. Sanabria (15 ties), on their impressive performances!

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the event such a fun and memorable success. We’re already looking forward to the next competition! πŸŒŸπŸ’šπŸ©Ί

Wellness, gratitude, fellowship, and celebration! πŸ«ΆπŸƒπŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ

This week, our Women in Surgery chapter gathered for a special wellness luncheon to celebrate an incredible year of accomplishments, thank our faculty sponsors for their mentorship and support, and honor our graduating chiefs, Drs. Anderson and Arcand, as they prepare to begin fellowship.

Our residents and faculty enjoyed a restorative yoga session led by Gina Hart-Smith focused on relaxation, renewal, and wellnessβ€”an important reminder of the value of caring for ourselves while caring for others.

The celebration also included beautiful individual graze boxes from Boujee Boards by Roz and a delicious dessert from Cakes by Liza. Fellowship care packages filled with thoughtful notes and wellness items for our graduating chiefs rounded out the event and made the afternoon even more special.

We are so proud of the supportive community our Women in Surgery chapter continues to build and grateful for the mentorship, friendship, and encouragement shared among this incredible group of women surgeons and trainees.

A special thank you to Gina, Roz, and Liza: We were honored to highlight and support these talented local women-led businesses and professionals who helped make the event so meaningful. πŸ’šπŸ©ΊπŸŒŸ

Please join us in congratulating our PGY3, Dr. Kassidy Price, on receiving a Golden Apple Award from the medical students at the University of Kentucky during her visiting Pediatric Surgery rotation! 🍎✨

β€œDr. Price was one of the best residents that I have ever worked with. Her exemplary manner of talking with both patients and working with the team is something that I will take forward with me throughout my career. She went above and beyond every day to make sure that I was both challenged and had opportunities to succeed during my pediatric surgery rotation. She always had a positive attitude and was enjoyable to work with despite the stress of operating on sick children.”

We are incredibly proud to see Dr. Price recognized for her dedication to patient care, teaching, teamwork, and professionalism. She represents the very best of our residency program and the future of surgery. Congratulations, Dr. Price! πŸ‘πŸ©ΊπŸ’™
