One of the biggest misconceptions about post-operative care is that recovery is simply about getting a lymphatic massage. In reality, successful recovery requires a comprehensive decongestive approach.
Managing post-surgical swelling involves much more than manual therapy. It includes appropriate compression, foam applications when indicated, therapeutic taping, scar management, movement, patient education, and procedure-specific protocols that evolve throughout each stage of healing.
The goal is not only to reduce swelling but also to support tissue healing, minimize fibrosis, improve comfort, and help achieve the best possible surgical outcome.
This is one of the reasons I value The Aftercare Academy so highly. Petra is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) who brings the principles of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) into the post-operative setting.
Her program teaches therapists how to integrate manual lymphatic techniques with proper compression selection, foam applications, therapeutic taping, scar management, and individualized protocols based on the specific surgical procedure and stage of recovery.
As therapists, understanding why we choose a technique is just as important as knowing how to perform it. Every patient and every procedure requires thoughtful clinical decision-making—not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
I completed my training with Petra and am honored to be hosting The Aftercare Academy Workshop this October while assisting with the course. Without question, it is one of the most valuable continuing education experiences I have had, and I believe it elevates the standard of post-operative care.
