Great news, Paige came off the ventilator this morning. She slept most of the night. The CT scan of her throat came back showing nothing, that’s what they were confirming. The swelling in her throat had gone down.

They will keep her in ICU until at least tomorrow. She’s awake and talking. She’s hungry. They have already started her back on her pain management.

It’s going to be a great day. Thank you so much for all the prayers and support. She doesn’t remember much of yesterday. God has taken care of her.

Thanks,
Holly

What a day. To walk in an ER room and find your child ventilated is a sick feeling. Especially when you had no idea any of that went on.

Let me take you through my day. After the ER informed us they were going to admit Paige and also do a CT scan just to make sure there were no changes from the last one, I left the hospital to go home. My plan was I would work a little today and come back down to UAB tonight for the weekend. You know, Paige is just going to be hanging around on pain meds so I didn’t think she needed me to be there the whole time. I get home a little after 6 AM. I thought I would grab a couple hours of sleep.

By 6:30 AM Paige was calling upset because they were telling her about they “should “ admit her but they were going to turn her over at shift change and it would be up to them. She still had not gone for the CT scan. I tried to reassure her everything would be fine. I told her I had to get some rest and I couldn’t just come right back.

Trying to get some rest Paige calls a little after 7 AM and tells me she is just got back from the Contrasting CT scan and her throat was feeling funny and she didn’t want to tell the nurse because she was afraid they would use an epi pin on her. Again I tried to reassure her to no avail.

By 7:30 AM I get a text from Paige telling me they had “stabbed her twice with epi pin” and they had given her some Benadryl. About 8 AM I get a text telling me she was on oxygen to help calm down. I sent a text back telling her I could come back down. No response. I’m thinking, she’s been on oxygen before no big deal.

About 8:30 AM I tried to call her because she never responded. No answer, I’m thinking maybe she’s just mad at me. I got dressed and tried to call again, again no answer. I headed out, after a few minutes I tried to call again, no answer. Now I’m getting very concerned. She’s not answering the phone and I’m not getting any text. Something just told me I needed to get there as soon as I could. I turned on my flashers and drive 90-100 all the way (well except for those people in the left lane that are just oblivious). I called several other times with no answer.

When I arrived and walked in to find my child on a ventilator (doesn’t matter their age), restrained and sedated my heart sank. Lots of doctors in the room. It’s like how did all this happen? They are assuming the contrast dye caused an allergic reaction. They are going to do a non-contrasting CT scan of her neck, throat and face just to make sure there wasn’t something else. That should be over night.

We finally got to the Medical ICU just at shift change 6:45-7 PM. They removed the restraints and woke her up a little. She is now back asleep and resting.

If anything can go wrong it seems to happen to Paige. Please keep her in your prayers tonight and also so she can get off the ventilator tomorrow.

Good Night,
Holly

Edited see end.

We went to the ER last night because Paige was still in so much pain. We were there until about 2 am before we could get back. After they told us they would be admitting her I left with plans to work today. I thought we would just be hanging out.

Before I left they told us they were going to a CT scan. Paige has had several so I left. Not long after I got home she called me and she had the CT scan with contrast just to make sure there were no changes. She had an allergy reaction. They had to use 2 Epi Pens but they were not working.

They had to put her on a ventilator to make sure her air way didn’t close up. All of this happened when I was not here. As she was afraid of something happening when she was by herself. Her words “her worst nightmare”. We are still in the ER but they will be admitting her to ICU. Hopefully she will not be on the ventilator long. They have her sedated because of her anxiety. Please pray for her.

We’re are at UAB and there were no charges to the CT scan.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support.

Please keep Paige in your prayers. She is still in lots of pain. We through we were coming home with what she was taking in the hospital but it’s a lower dose, and it went from every 4 hours to every 6. We didn’t realize until after we left. Paige’s pain management is not what she needs and because of that it is taking a toll on her mental health. She is just really struggling right now. She is going to have to endure this for a month or more, first just to get to the PET scan and then whatever time it takes to come up with the treatment plan. She has just been through so much. She just really needs some relief.

Thanks,
Holly

Made it home, finally. Please continue to prayer for Paige’s pain. She is still trying to get adjusted to the home pain meds. They are not really the same as she had in the hospital so hopefully they will level out soon. Appointments are 3-4 weeks out so she still has a ways to go.

Thanks you for all your prayers and support. We love each and every one of you. We know God is in control so we are trusting him.

The plan is to come home today. Just waiting on a few things and then we are out of here. It’s can’t be quick enough.

Over the next few weeks there will be the PET scan, labs, and a few doctor appointments.

Thank you again for all the prayers and support we have had.

Not much has really happened but this is what’s going on right now. They have put Paige on the at home plan for her pain management. They are going to keep her another day just to make sure that is working before they send her home.

We are trying to get the PET scan scheduled and then clinic. Paige will have weekly labs to monitor until clinic. They will be monitoring her EBV numbers as well, hopefully they will go down.

Just as an FYI, Paige’s liver numbers are great and she is having no issues with them. Replacing the stent did the trick.

Thank you for the continued prayers and support.

Last night was a very good night, they stayed on top of her pain. Still waiting on the MRI. MRI, hopefully today. Still no one wants to do the biopsy, but they are really thinking what is causing the masses is the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), same virus that causes mono. Nothing you can do about a virus, it just has to run its course. They have already cut Paige’s anti-rejection meds in half to help her body combat it on its own. Labs to see if that is working hasn’t come back yet.

So here is the plan they are talking about. MRI has to be done first. Schedule the PET scan (probably 2 weeks out). Send her home with Palliative Care. Earliest would be tomorrow. Lab work weekly. Clinic appointment 3 weeks with PET results and check the EBV levels.

Paige is not excited about going home and very nervous and anxious about the unknown and that she won’t be able to manage the pain the same way it’s being handled here.

Thanks Holly

Not much happening. Paige’s pain management is now under control, hopefully we can keep it that way. I might have used my mama voice. We really try hard not to complain but I also have to take care of Paige. The doctor the last two days could see how much pain Paige was in and said something as well. For the most part we can’t complain. We have had some really good nurses. All the different doctors and departments that have been involved with Paige’s care have been great. So glad we are at UAB.

Still waiting on the MRI. They have finally agreed to do the PET scan, when they have a cancellation. We are not expecting that to be any time soon. Radiology said no to the biopsy. Our understanding is our liver team is still working on a plan, just don’t know what that’s going to look like yet. Hopefully we will find out something more tomorrow.

Our night nurse is really nice so we are planning on a good night.

Good night and thank you for all your prayers.

Doctors came in this morning. MRI is scheduled for today. The liver surgery team recommended seeing if Diagnostic Radiology will do a guided CT scan for the biopsy. This is a different radiology department than before. For that they would put her under, so if they agree the easiest would be tomorrow.

They are still working on the PET scan, in reality we think it’s the insurance that has been holding the PET scan up. There is a PET scan in the building but they only do out patient. I told the doctor to give me a wheelchair and I would take her down there myself, but it’s not that simple. I have never understood why insurance companies/employees with no medical training feel they have the right to dictate what doctors can and can not do. I know most of you have experienced this same type crap.

Pain management is still an issue. Between the scheduling times and the amount of time Paige actionably gets it, her pain is then more than she can take. Then we are chasing the pain. After talking to the doctor this morning pain management should improve. We understand Paige is not the only patient that needs attention but when it’s you that is hurting it’s hard not to be basis.

Paige’s live team assured us things would happen this week.

Thank you for all you prayers, love and support.
