What a day. To walk in an ER room and find your child ventilated is a sick feeling. Especially when you had no idea any of that went on.
Let me take you through my day. After the ER informed us they were going to admit Paige and also do a CT scan just to make sure there were no changes from the last one, I left the hospital to go home. My plan was I would work a little today and come back down to UAB tonight for the weekend. You know, Paige is just going to be hanging around on pain meds so I didn’t think she needed me to be there the whole time. I get home a little after 6 AM. I thought I would grab a couple hours of sleep.
By 6:30 AM Paige was calling upset because they were telling her about they “should “ admit her but they were going to turn her over at shift change and it would be up to them. She still had not gone for the CT scan. I tried to reassure her everything would be fine. I told her I had to get some rest and I couldn’t just come right back.
Trying to get some rest Paige calls a little after 7 AM and tells me she is just got back from the Contrasting CT scan and her throat was feeling funny and she didn’t want to tell the nurse because she was afraid they would use an epi pin on her. Again I tried to reassure her to no avail.
By 7:30 AM I get a text from Paige telling me they had “stabbed her twice with epi pin” and they had given her some Benadryl. About 8 AM I get a text telling me she was on oxygen to help calm down. I sent a text back telling her I could come back down. No response. I’m thinking, she’s been on oxygen before no big deal.
About 8:30 AM I tried to call her because she never responded. No answer, I’m thinking maybe she’s just mad at me. I got dressed and tried to call again, again no answer. I headed out, after a few minutes I tried to call again, no answer. Now I’m getting very concerned. She’s not answering the phone and I’m not getting any text. Something just told me I needed to get there as soon as I could. I turned on my flashers and drive 90-100 all the way (well except for those people in the left lane that are just oblivious). I called several other times with no answer.
When I arrived and walked in to find my child on a ventilator (doesn’t matter their age), restrained and sedated my heart sank. Lots of doctors in the room. It’s like how did all this happen? They are assuming the contrast dye caused an allergic reaction. They are going to do a non-contrasting CT scan of her neck, throat and face just to make sure there wasn’t something else. That should be over night.
We finally got to the Medical ICU just at shift change 6:45-7 PM. They removed the restraints and woke her up a little. She is now back asleep and resting.
If anything can go wrong it seems to happen to Paige. Please keep her in your prayers tonight and also so she can get off the ventilator tomorrow.
Good Night,
Holly
