Turning the Paige: A Liver Story

Turning the Paige: A Liver Story Thank you for following along on Paige’s journey to a new liver!

August 19th update:

The doctors over the past couple of days have watched to make sure the pain management plan they have me on is actually working and managing my pain, we think we have found a good plan that is keeping the pain to a manageable amount. Since we are in a good place with the regime I am being discharged home today!! I am so excited to be back home where I can get comfortable and actually get some sleep throughout the night! I am so thankful for all your prayers throughout this hospitalization and the scary situation that happened in the beginning, thank you for praying for me and for mom during all of this and being such a supportive and caring village! I read and saw each of your comments and likes or other reactions but have just been so exhausted that I’ve not been able to be as active online to respond but I did see them and they certainly made me feel loved and cared for! Hopefully we will now be able to successfully make it to the PetScan next month to get the answers and that they will be able to find a solution based off that scan. 💚💚 can’t wait to get home today!

Made it to a room last night. Still working on pain management. We know Paige is not the only patient but not getting your meds when you need them is a constant battle. It’s hard to know if they will work from home because she’s relying on someone else to dispense them. That’s the biggest struggle right now.

And when you’re already in pain little things become BIG things. The remote in the room quit working during the night and it’s still not working. When you can’t really do anything a working TV 📺 is a BIG deal.

We had a pretty good night. Got some rest. Paige’s pain is being managed and she has been eating better. They are working on seeing about moving her from ICU to the floor later today or tomorrow. Not really much more to report. Liver numbers are still good. PET scan is still scheduled for September.

Again thank you so much for all your prayers. We know God is involved in and is in control of her care. We couldn’t continue through this journey without all of you prayer warriors.

After a crazy few days I was go glad to get a visit from my Hepa Homie so we could cut up and giggle this afternoon. How Evan managed to put up with us both is beyond me. So thankful for my friendship with Danielle and the fact that we are able to relate to each other in a way that not everyone can. Today’s visit was just what my spirit needed!

Paige had a great day!! She’s been sitting up in a chair almost all day. They have her pain under control. When she was vented they also had a feeding tube in so they were able to get something on her stomach. Now she is not as nauseated. She has been eating more than she has in weeks. She feeling much better and she looks more like herself.

God heard your prayers and has answered. Thank you for your continued prayers and support.

Great news, Paige came off the ventilator this morning. She slept most of the night. The CT scan of her throat came back showing nothing, that’s what they were confirming. The swelling in her throat had gone down.

They will keep her in ICU until at least tomorrow. She’s awake and talking. She’s hungry. They have already started her back on her pain management.

It’s going to be a great day. Thank you so much for all the prayers and support. She doesn’t remember much of yesterday. God has taken care of her.

Thanks,
Holly

What a day. To walk in an ER room and find your child ventilated is a sick feeling. Especially when you had no idea any of that went on.

Let me take you through my day. After the ER informed us they were going to admit Paige and also do a CT scan just to make sure there were no changes from the last one, I left the hospital to go home. My plan was I would work a little today and come back down to UAB tonight for the weekend. You know, Paige is just going to be hanging around on pain meds so I didn’t think she needed me to be there the whole time. I get home a little after 6 AM. I thought I would grab a couple hours of sleep.

By 6:30 AM Paige was calling upset because they were telling her about they “should “ admit her but they were going to turn her over at shift change and it would be up to them. She still had not gone for the CT scan. I tried to reassure her everything would be fine. I told her I had to get some rest and I couldn’t just come right back.

Trying to get some rest Paige calls a little after 7 AM and tells me she is just got back from the Contrasting CT scan and her throat was feeling funny and she didn’t want to tell the nurse because she was afraid they would use an epi pin on her. Again I tried to reassure her to no avail.

By 7:30 AM I get a text from Paige telling me they had “stabbed her twice with epi pin” and they had given her some Benadryl. About 8 AM I get a text telling me she was on oxygen to help calm down. I sent a text back telling her I could come back down. No response. I’m thinking, she’s been on oxygen before no big deal.

About 8:30 AM I tried to call her because she never responded. No answer, I’m thinking maybe she’s just mad at me. I got dressed and tried to call again, again no answer. I headed out, after a few minutes I tried to call again, no answer. Now I’m getting very concerned. She’s not answering the phone and I’m not getting any text. Something just told me I needed to get there as soon as I could. I turned on my flashers and drive 90-100 all the way (well except for those people in the left lane that are just oblivious). I called several other times with no answer.

When I arrived and walked in to find my child on a ventilator (doesn’t matter their age), restrained and sedated my heart sank. Lots of doctors in the room. It’s like how did all this happen? They are assuming the contrast dye caused an allergic reaction. They are going to do a non-contrasting CT scan of her neck, throat and face just to make sure there wasn’t something else. That should be over night.

We finally got to the Medical ICU just at shift change 6:45-7 PM. They removed the restraints and woke her up a little. She is now back asleep and resting.

If anything can go wrong it seems to happen to Paige. Please keep her in your prayers tonight and also so she can get off the ventilator tomorrow.

Good Night,
Holly

Edited see end.

We went to the ER last night because Paige was still in so much pain. We were there until about 2 am before we could get back. After they told us they would be admitting her I left with plans to work today. I thought we would just be hanging out.

Before I left they told us they were going to a CT scan. Paige has had several so I left. Not long after I got home she called me and she had the CT scan with contrast just to make sure there were no changes. She had an allergy reaction. They had to use 2 Epi Pens but they were not working.

They had to put her on a ventilator to make sure her air way didn’t close up. All of this happened when I was not here. As she was afraid of something happening when she was by herself. Her words “her worst nightmare”. We are still in the ER but they will be admitting her to ICU. Hopefully she will not be on the ventilator long. They have her sedated because of her anxiety. Please pray for her.

We’re are at UAB and there were no charges to the CT scan.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support.

Please keep Paige in your prayers. She is still in lots of pain. We through we were coming home with what she was taking in the hospital but it’s a lower dose, and it went from every 4 hours to every 6. We didn’t realize until after we left. Paige’s pain management is not what she needs and because of that it is taking a toll on her mental health. She is just really struggling right now. She is going to have to endure this for a month or more, first just to get to the PET scan and then whatever time it takes to come up with the treatment plan. She has just been through so much. She just really needs some relief.

Thanks,
Holly

Made it home, finally. Please continue to prayer for Paige’s pain. She is still trying to get adjusted to the home pain meds. They are not really the same as she had in the hospital so hopefully they will level out soon. Appointments are 3-4 weeks out so she still has a ways to go.

Thanks you for all your prayers and support. We love each and every one of you. We know God is in control so we are trusting him.
