I recently had the opportunity to review The Business of You as a potential read for seniors in Caroline County schools, and it gave me a fresh perspective on both my personal life and my private massage practice.
"If you study something that doesn't serve others, it's just a hobby. If you study something that solves problems, it's a career."
After graduating high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I just knew I wanted to "be somebody and be something." My path took me through working in a cardiology and physical therapy office while attending Chesapeake College full-time, part-time, and even night classes. While working as an exercise tech, I learned about the massage therapy program at Chesapeake College. At that point, I had only received one professional massage myself—but something told me it was the right path.
Nearly 17 years later, I still look forward to seeing my clients every day. "Your time is your capital, spend it wisely," I've learned my most valuable resources aren't just income, they're time and energy and how I invest in those have made the biggest impact in my life.
"How you do anything is how you do everything." That simple idea has challenged me to look at many areas of my life differently.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to read and review this book, and I hope it inspires future graduates to trust themselves, stay open to unexpected opportunities, and pursue work that serves others.
